I don't get it, is it supposed to mimmick a smith machine? And if so, why? There are cheaper coat racks out there. And why's he squatting in jeans?

I think his heart is in the right place, but I see problems...

1. Doesn't allow for deep squats
2. Have to start at the bottom of the squat position
3. I can't get Comcast in my area.

I don't think it's exactly like a smith machine. You wouldn't be chanelled perfectly straight up and down as the bar is on chains. I had the same thoughts on the rails though.

I suspect he is squatting in jeans because he finished his master piece and was taking a picture.

Well you could make it allow for deep squats easy enough, but yes you would have to start and end in the squat position. Also something I had thought of.

I still liked the idea, simple and cheap squat station even if it's not nearly as cool as a power rack.

It is called a "cable bar system". Ironmind sells a book by the late J.V. Askem that has the complete plans for the system, along with other home built equipment.
