Alternative to Chin Ups and Pull Ups
I am new to posting here at JP but have been reading posts and searching for a little over a year. I have lost 60 lbs through nutrition, lifting, and HIIT that I have learned about primarily through this site. I would like to start Barely Legal, but I don't have the strength to do chin ups or pull ups. Is there an alternative that I can substitute? Thanks!

Try negatives. Use a bench or something to get to the top of the chin-up and slowly lower yourself (5secs or so)

I agree that negative will work, but they are very hard. Grip is also often an issue when you fail in a chinup. Christian Thibaudeau wrote a great article on how to bring up your chinup.

That was a great article. Grip has been affecting my progress on the dead lift also, so I think am am going to have to work on that first. Thanks!

Just hanging will do wonders too. Hanging with your chin above the bar and in the dead hang position will help your grip big time.

Reverse Pushups (The smith machine has at least one use).

Sorry, I just found them at Ironmind.com and they should be arriving in about 6 days.
Grip strength has been a problem for me too.

They are great!
For NEGATIVES, I would suggest jumping up, rather than using a chair- might as well work as hard as you can.

If you have access to a jump stretch band or just bands in general; you can use those to get some accomodating resistance at the bottom. Basically, you wrap the bands around the cross-bar and then place your knee in the band. You'll get some help at the bottom to help your starting strength and then as you pull more towards the bar, you'll be pulling more of your own weight. As you get stronger, you use a thinner band. I like this approach moreso than just using a counterbalance machine.

Could one of you experts comment on the assisted pullup/chinup machine? To my very untrained eye it looks like it should be helpful in working up to a BW pullup, but I've never seen anyone recommend it.
