Default Push press, triceps?

So, after 3 sets of push press yesterday my tris are really sore. weird thing is, this has never happened with any other overhead movement. could it be because the drive from my leg got the bar pretty high, and the last rom of a regular military press is mostly the tris or what? :S

The lockout is all tris.

Also, the eccentric porition of a movement often causes more soreness than the concentric. Figure in the fact that a push-press is going to be more weight than a normal military press... heavier eccentric, etc. etc.

Actually to get your shoulders involved, use LESS leg drive. A push press is supposed to basically be a slightly cheated military press, using a little leg drive to get the bar moving, and the shoulders and tri's to lock it out. When you start upping the weight and using more leg drive it becomes a push-jerk, which is more of a full body power movement than a shoulder exercise. But both will still hit your shoulders and tri's, just holding the weight up there does that, plus the heavy negative like Rock Hard said. And I'm not sure how reps you were doing, but both of these moves should be done with heavy weights and low reps.

i was doing 6 reps. push jerk, i always thought that was just a push press with a dip. you know, like you do when you clean and jerk, only that the push press dip was a squat instead of the split you do on the jerk.

The push-jerk is different from a split-jerk. A split jerk is where you split your legs at the bottom into a lunge position to get under the bar. In both the push press and the push jerk your feet remain in the same position. But with the push jerk you use a lot of leg drive and dip down to get under the bar. With the push press, just a slight leg drive is used to start the movement, but you don't dip under the bar, you use your shoulders and tri's to lock it out.
