Default Good Info?

I found this when I was browsing this morning. I thought she had some good points but missed the overall picture by a mile. Her idea of a calorie is a calorie is not how I see it. What do you think?

I haven't read the article but the argument has always lacked logic to me. Everything I can think of has grades of quality. What would you rather have a Ford Focus or Benz, candy bar or fruit. A car is not a car and a calorie can't be just a calorie.

tonyG mentioned in another thread that calorie count wins over all else. I'll believe him. but like you guys 2k calories heavy in fiber and protien...has a different effect on me than 2k worth of pop tarts. that's an extreme example but in truth the "average" person is probibly closer to an extreme than the middle.

IMO health ought to be #1. If you're eating healthy and active then *most* of the weight related issues will probibly work themselves out. If not then adjust a little. Being skinny should not be the goal in itself.

Technically a calorie is a calorie. But food is not food. Calorie is just a unit of measure. Foods have a lot more than just calories. They have nutrients, they effect the body in certain ways. The make up of the food is used differently by the body.

I think for most people if they actually just looked at their calories in vs calories out without looking at other things like nutrient ratios they would be a LOT better off. It would force them to drink LESS coke and eat FEWER big macs.

A calorie is a calorie, but where you get those calories is very important.

#1 Agree, you have to know before you can make changes.

#2 Eating anytime during the morning is breakfast to me so hmm...

#3 I wish she would've pushed for 6 meals instead of saying eat whenever

#4/5 Finally someone not slamming carbs or fat

#6 Agree, tell anyone they can never eat x again and they'll never stick to any plan

#7 Bugs me b/c she downplays exersicing by saying it doesn't burn that many calories. Exercising should be a key part in any lifestyle change along with diet. Both IMHO are equally important to being healthy.

#8 Way too much emphasis on you weight while not pointing out that weight isn't the only measure. BF%, clothes fit, and how you look in the mirror are all important when measuring progress.

#9 Calories may not know time, but digesting your entire 2k worth of cals for the day right before bed can't be a good thing.

#10 Might be just me, but the calories she has up there as what to eat daily seem mighty low.

For weight loss the whole calorie is a calorie makes sense but nutritionally it loses it's foundation. It would be a little tough for me to make a day if all I ate was 6 candy bars as opposed to 6 well balanced meals. That is like preaching to the choir in this forum though.

In general, yes......total OVERALL calories will win. But that's not to say that the compostion of the food you eat won't have a different effect as far as thermic effect, partitioning, etc; which I think is what you're getting at anyways.

tony> My post probibly didn't come off too well. What I meant was that overall she (in the article) is right on "at the end of the day you're over\undeating as determined by calories". That said, *imo* the concern shouldn't be on eating less for most people but eating better.

It just seems crazy for people to be concerned about being lean or skinny when they're eating like ass. If you're not physically healthy then that's going to impact pretty much every aspect of everything. In hindsite it doesn't have anything to do with the topic. sorry.
