After reading Eric's suggestions to use a powerlifter BP with elbows tucked rather than the bodybuilder (flared), I decided to give the tuck ago. My left shoulder makes a poping/grinding sound. (EVEN with very light weight). With the flared, I have not had problems (except for when I stupidly tried too much weight). Aside from the obvious (do the the BB style) any comments on why that might be? Thoughts or whatever?
Thanks

Are you arching your back and squeezing your scapula together? Doing them PL style, you gotta get a good arch in your back with scapular retraction(kinda puts you in a decline position, but on a flat bench). If you're doing it flat, the humeral head is close to the acromion, possibly pinching/rubbing the rotator cuff muscles that are between them. Putting an arch in your back and squeezing the shoulder blades together opens the shoulder up a bit so you don't have the impingement, etc.
That's my $.02...

Nice post Steve-O, I'm guessing all your studying is paying off big time!

Peter, this is the link to the Eric's Shoulder Savers article. A little way down the page he describes how to bench press and there's a couple of videos there too. It looks like his hand position is the same on the bar so he's not gripping with a close grip. But there are major changes in his body position on the bench and his arm position when pressing. Hope the visual helps.

Thanks again for the posts. Old Guy - yup, that is the one, and I will try again, looking more for the arch and the tetraction (bench is part of tonight's workout)
Thanks
