Mahler’s Monday Morning Motivator # 121 – The Three R’s
The Three R’s
Now that it is late June and the sun has made its journey north, you can be sure that school is out and the kids are free to enjoy the seemingly endless swim in the summer’s heat.
Left behind, both now, and perhaps a while ago are the traditional three R’s: Reading, (w)Riting and (a)Rithmetic. I have always had a problem with that expression. If one is competent in the first, they should surely know that the spelling on the other two is incorrect. Of course, a lot of the three R’s have changed and in many an educational setting it might be Recess, Recreation and Rights, but that is another matter for another day.
There are, however, three R’s that should not be relegated to the world of our youth and of our upbringing and education. These are the three R’s that we should carry with us for the duration of our passage through this world. The three R’s that I propose are Respect, Reality and Responsibility.
Foremost, our journey through life should be one that is kept on its course by a healthy dose of respect. It is our respect for others and an equally important respect for ourselves that should be the primary force in how we live our lives. Respect, however, is not something we can demand for ourselves or give to others casually. It is something that is earned and, when you think about it, the price is not a costly one. I leave that to your imagination.
In addition, I suggest that each of us makes sure that what we have or what we wish to attain is real. While I have always thought that every life be lived as a child would live it, with a sense of awe and wonder and with healthy doses of daydreaming and fantasy, I realize too, that we must make our goals, our aspirations, something that we can truly achieve, something that is worth striving for. So, a good portion of Reality should be in the mix. If what we have today is real, however good or bad, then what we want it to be tomorrow must be just as real and just as attainable.
To make things happen; to give and to receive the respect we so highly value and to achieve the possible, the real that is in us, we must take charge. We must, in short, be Responsible. This is a duty we owe to ourselves and to those around us. Saying we will accomplish; wishing it to be so; dreaming about someday, do not make it the reality that is to be hoped for. Taking the responsibility to set out, to work for, and to achieve, is our commitment to self.
These three R’s are not new and they are not earth shaking in their vision. I am quite sure they have been said before in any number of ways, but they are certainly worthy of our attention and we all need to be reminded of their importance from time to time. Just as the three R’s of our school days should never end. Just as we should always continue to read, to express our thoughts, and to continue learning throughout our lives, so too should we make these three R’s a lifelong process and a doorway to the happenings that are yet to be.

Mahler I think this one is one of my top favorites of your MMMM's. Truly awesome. It strikes me how people forget about these three r's and they are so very important. Thanks John

"I don't mind at all," I said. "It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like so long as somebody loves you."
Thanks John. I really needed to read those words this morning. This stage of transition in my life has me a little off balance, but things like this help me get my footing. You are a gem!
Good stuff John . I agree whole heartedly. I bet some people will probably think "I already know this!", but yet they probably don't do it. I'll make an effort into following the three R's.
