Does he think a third party candidate can make a viable run for the White House in '08?

What was it like for someone without a degree in Exercise Science to study for and pass the CSCS exam? How would he recommend someone without an Exercise Science background to approach the material?

Give a brief summary of each person with whom you've co-authored a book:

Mike Mejia
Ian King
Alwyn Cosgrove
Others?

Compare BOM Advanced to New Rules workouts. BOM never states a goal, strength or hypertrophy, for their workouts.

About the NROL: Do the programs have to be followed in order such As FL1, FL2, FL3? Or Is it feasible to do FL1, Strength 1, HT1, etc?

Kevin,

Did you read the section on recommended progressions based on personal profile? Lou/Alwyn go through that pretty extensively, showing both the progressions and the rationale behind them.

Is there a book you really, really want to write that no publisher will take on?

What's your most important work? The one that's positively influenced the most people.

Kevin,

Along the same vein as Roland's book topic.....

What is one thing that readers would not believe happens in the book publishing process? Like faked photos, or outright lies that the publisher wants added to your book to sell more books.

Thanks,

Scott G

Good stuff guys, I am going to pick 4 or 5 since this is not really an interview, more of a discussion with topics. Thanks again, I may have the show up tonight, but I think I will save it for saturday afternoon.

Does he ever do book signing tours? If so where can we find a list of appearance dates.

and/or

I've currently been reading through NROL and have been tweaking form on some exercises while i adjust my sleep schedule to give me time to lift (i fit lifter profile #3). Do i need to worry that i feel almost nothing in my hammies/glutes, but am always sore in my quads? How do i tell if they're overcompensating for weak hind legs, or catching up to stronger hind legs?

What would he recommend as the best get-started books and programs for middle-aged and older women who have been endurance-athletic as adults but don't know squat about strength training?

I'm talking about women whose goal is longterm survival — with the occasional bout of semi-mad multisport performance obsession mixed in there.

I think the Democrats and Republicans will become unrecognizable to us in the next few election cycles. The Democrats will step away from the urban/technocrat base a bit and embrace more populist positions. The natural constituency for the Democrats is economically populist but socially moderate to conservative, but they've been alienating the socially conservative segment for at least a generation.

Meanwhile, the Republicans will have to do something about their fundamentalist problem. The historical trends are moving away from fundamentalism, and they're going to have to broaden their appeal, probably by embracing some moderate positions on social issues.

In other words, I think they've gone as far as they can by fueling the fire in the culture wars, and their leaders are going to have to take a gigantic step back if they want to keep the party relevant.

So, in other words, I think we'll still have parties called "Democratic" and "Republican," but those parties will shift some positions to broaden their appeal.

Alas, I'm not holding my breath for either party to embrace genuine reform and end legal bribery and the revolving door from public service to private profit. Once the Democrats regain control of Congress, I think we're going to see more of the same, with different party affiliations. It certainly won't be as hard-wired and anti-democratic as what DeLay Inc. did with the K Street Project -- Democrats don't have that kind of corruption in their DNA, and they're geeky enough to believe government can actually help people. But where there's power there's corruption, world without end, amen.

I answer this on the podcast, so I won't pre-empt myself here. But I will say it was like learning a foreign language, and should probably be approached with that kind of effort and timetable.

They're all a hell of a lot smarter than me!

They also have eclectic approaches to training, with ideas pulled from many places -- none, in other words, is an exercise fundamentalist, with rigid beliefs that can't change when better information comes along.

Also, they all have similar approaches to the issue of recovery. Ian, in particular, was the first guy I worked with who drew a line between what juiced and drug-free users could do in a workout, and how efficiently they could recover from that workout.

What I learned from those guys has informed everything I've written in the past eight years, since I started working regularly with Mike.

BTW, Mike introduced me to Alwyn.

The first time I met Ian, I tried to introduce him to Alwyn, not knowing they were already working together.

That's sort of the way it's gone for me as a fitness journalist. All the people I wanted to know already knew each other, because the smartest people with the best ideas want to pick the brains of the people they admire.

The premise of BOM advanced is that you have to develop strength to develop muscle mass, and that you need muscle mass to develop additional strength. That's what it uses an alternating-periodization, vs. the more linear periodization of the BOM Beginner and Intermediate programs.

Hey, Lou, not a bad assessment at all!

Re the CSCS exam, I also like that analogy. I think it can really help to get someone in the proper mindset of the task before them.

You're on a roll today, bud!

That would be TAP, no question. I've just submitted a proposal for a book for women that, I hope, would serve the same function of debunking a lot of exercise and diet mythology, and giving women a framework that's more sensible than what's come before.

Quote:

I sort of answer this in the podcast. Mainly, I'd really like to do something that explains how we got to be the way we are, why some people are different in terms of genetic propensities toward fat storage, exercise preference, ability to tolerate exercise, etc.

I could write an entire book about how TAP came to be, how many times it was almost derailed, and how the repercussions of TAP's success in 2002 led to my demise at Rodale in 2004.

But, for the foreseeable future, I have to avoid saying too much about all that.

First, it's bad for business to make enemies, or antagonize people who have already chosen that designation.

Second, nobody in his right mind should give a shit ... including me!

I mean, bottom line, it worked out for everybody. Eggs were broken and omelettes were made. That's life.

Fine for PR lifts in the squat and deadlift. Otherwise, build your own belt from the inside out. If you haven't trained your own midsection muscles to support your spine on everything short of a 1RM attempt, you've done something wrong, and need to step back and fix it.

This isn't medical advice, by the way. If a doctor or physical therapist has told you to wear a belt, take that advice, not mine.

Ha! I'm not anywhere close to that level in the publishing world. I'd have to go from selling hundreds of books a week to selling tens of thousands before a publisher would even consider the expense.

They'll do book tours for some new authors if they think the book has breakout potential. With some books, particularly memoirs, people genuinely want to meet the authors and have some kind of personal contact.

They don't do it for guys writing fitness books who have steady but unspectacular sales. I've done hundreds of radio interviews, and whatever print interviews I can, from my own office. It works fine and it's very efficient.

That said, I truly enjoy meeting readers. But before a publisher spends tens of thousands of dollars to send me out, they have to be sure thousands of readers want to meet me.

As I said above, I just submitted a proposal for a book for women. The working title is "Lift Like a Man." I hope it addresses everything you're concerned about.

If I thought that a great book for women existed, I wouldn't have bothered spending four months writing a proposal for my own.

For now, though, New Rules of Lifting should help you get the knowledge you want. Just mentally edit the male pronouns to make them female.
