Default Are balance boards worthwhile?

I tried to do Bularians today, but it took on the order of five minutes or more to do a warmup set of eight. I keep losing my balance and having to reset, plus the frustration factor sends me walkng and bitching.

I think part of the problem is over controling, where I lose balance to one side and over compensate to the other, which keeps me wobbling until I have to get both feet back on the ground.

What I'm doing now for balance exercise is to stand on one foot and do lateral leg raises, as close to ballet as an ape can get, since my balance problem seems mostly lateral in nature.

Is this effective? Should I consider getting some equipment to assist?

Nothing beats single leg squats for balance work. If you want to heighten the proprioceptive elements of balance work, perform teh SL Squats barefoot.

Balance boards are fine, but in my case, clients have mastered them rather easily after we performed SL squats. So I hade to throw in some shoulder presses, curls, or lateral raises while on the BB.

However, the last thing you want to do is look like you are practicing fo the circus.

Thus, I'm not going to ask about a BOSU.

My legs aren't strong enough for SLSs/pistol squats, so I'm trying to do Bulagrians to build them up. But, if I can't even keep my balance for BSSs, I doubt very much I'll be able to do SLSs.

I might be stuck with BW BSSs for now, as I seem to be ok when doing them with no weight. I figure at a slow tempo should help develop stability and control for now.

Not to hi-jack or anything...but how do you suggest you progress to a full single leg squat. I've read to start sitting down on a bench or box and lower the box until you can get up on your own. Or should you just use something to hang on to for support>

Any other suggestions on how to progress to doing them fully?

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem. I just do them next to a rack or chair or something that I can just touch to stabilize. After a few weeks, it wasn't required anymore.

I agree with Sean, I started doing a couple holding onto a solid object and then just 'went' for it and managed to do it unsupported; go from there.

I'll try. Right now, I'm doing BW BSSs. As strange as it sounds, even though I feel my left side is my weakest, I seem to be most unbalanced on my right side. I even got sore in my left quad supporting myself while doing BSSs with my right leg.

A balance board would do nothing for you in this case. About the only thing they will help you with is cool balance board party tricks.

Blackjack - I would progress to a full single leg squat by starting standing on a bench like this:

Just work on getting deeper and deeper.

I took the pics from a kickass Mike Robertson article. Check it out guys: http://www.t-nation.com/findArticle....4-017-training
