Alright, so who's in for a race to 405 or 500 deadlift? I know Chris, and kuri and i are all racing for it, so who else is in. Winner gets bragging rights.
I am heading for 405, but I am not sure I plan to make it a race. I want to progress safely (old fart wisdom kicking in). But I will get there somewhere in the pack.
Eric does not count, because I have it on good authority that he is not human.

I am going to pull mine in a belt and straps because its allowed in the strongman contest I am doing in 2 weeks. But I have no problem waiting until after that to pull it belt free for the official contest.
Why no belt but straps are allowed out of curiousity? I would guess straps give more support than a belt.

Straps? Huh. Hell, I might be able to do it very soon with straps. I never use them, and although my grip is pretty damn good, they always gave me an extra 15-20 pound advantage when I did them back when...
I just hate belts and think they hurt you in the long run. As for straps, I'm not 100% sure, but think 99% of us can not hold 500lbs without some sort of grip help. If we want to make this 100% raw, I am also in, but that would push me back down to 470 range max.
I have a question for those of you who lift heavy...
What does the progression look like, when you're shooting for your PR that day? If someone could list out the reps and sets, as an example, I'd appreciate it.
My past DLs have always been so light that I didn't worry too much about it. I ramped up, but I topped out pretty light.
Having recently been able to overcome some stupid form problems (But, I don't want Mr, I'm-Merely-Going-For-650 to get a swelled head, though), now I want to be more careful.
I'll sign up for the 405 race, but having just hit 305, I'm thinking of taking home the 10th place ribbon.
Sign me up for the 500lb race even though I'm still trying to fight back from my damned hip flexor injury (thanks EC). I'll do it sans belt or straps because that's how I lift. Chalk is definitely necessary, though. I've done rack pulls for reps with over 500lbs and grip has never been an issue. My skinny, weak body, on the other hand, tends to give out first...
LD- When pulling for a max DL, I like to keep the volume very low on the warm ups. 135 for a few, a couple at 225 and 315, a single at 405 and then I do my max attempt.
Thanks guys. I was concerned about not being warmed up enough, yet blowing all my energy too early. Thanks for the details.
As to the straps, I'd tend to agree with your rationale. The belt doesn't make you stronger or lift heavier does it? Just, in theory, give some protection. The straps shore up a week area, allowing you to lift more.
That being said, I'm desperately trying to shore up my grip, since my wrists and forearms are so f'd up from my past years of cycling. Bill Hartman's ACT and exercises are helping a lot, but my grip gives out, suddenly, at WAY less than I can actually lift.
I can go either way on the straps and belt. I train both with and without them. I go by what my next contest allows. Because my next one allows straps and a belt, thats how I have been training. Typically I don't use either.
I just pulled a heavy single because its been a while and here was my progression.
135x5
225x3
315x3
405x1
455x1
405x1
This wasn't a max, just something to get a feel for heavy weight.
Lost Dog - I do get weight out of my belt. It allows you to get tighter and create more pressure keeping you more stable. This tends to translate into more weight.
Newlife - I can hold 500
