Sick, SOB. Why do you keep tormenting us with these finds? Just when we all think we are making progress, you post a link and all vanishes into nothingness.

I tried to do one on a bar. What a joke. I couldn't come close to generating the force I needed to rapidly pull my body up over the bar. .....I will be there eventually though.
You will get there Kaiser. I get my sternum to the bar, allllmost to dip position but can't quite get over that last hurdle.
To date I've done 3 assisted muscle ups on rings. Zero from a hang.
Dammit those are tough!
Let's start a muscle up support group

I haven't even FAILED at my first one yet... but I'm eager to start!
This is the kind of stuff that I think having the equipment handy makes all the difference. Now that I have the 95 lb bar set up in the garage, my thrusters have improved dramatically. I was watching the Spurs the other night and, when a commercial came on, I'd go knock out a set of 10. If the rings are readily available, hopefully I can get better at using them. These are situations where Pavel's "Greasing the Groove" works.
i could do a few in high school, but gravity seems to have increased over the last 18 years. Unfortunately my ceiling is too low in the basement for me to attempt a muscle up on the rings. I tried one using a bar at the local playground this fall...indistinguishable from a normal pull-up. I was bummed, but also took heart that I haven’t really practiced or reviewed any tips at that point. Definitely would like to be able to do one on the rings by spring.
That site SELLS rings for $69.XX +s/h... total, $79.XX. GO HERE
I ordered mine today and my plan is to hang them from a tree limb when in use.
Oh... was that SPAM since I was "promoting" a product? Actually, I got that from a CrossFit thread and they have pointed me to good places before to buy good stuff at good prices.
I'm always amazed by the cross-fit workouts. It seems you need a ton of base strength to do a lot of their workouts. Basically it seems you need a 2x body weight deadlift, 1.5x body weight squat, and 1x body weight bench minimum before you even attempt any of their stuff at the recommended weights.
I wonder how I'll ever get there for strength with my very long limbs. Muscle-ups look freakishly hard for me.
KM, you just adjust the loads to fit your capabilities.
For instance "Grace" is 30 clean & jerks with 135lbs but they suggest you do them with a broomstick if necessary to keep the power output high.
I can't do Linda in an hour with recommended loads yet either, but it gives me a goal to work towards!
I know some crossfit workouts seem very daunting at first but start out with 1 or 2 a week that you think you can do and gradually up your weights as technique/strength develop.

Kuri beat me to it. Yeah, you just adjust loads accordingly. I will say that having a high lactate threshhold or a high pain tolerance certainly helps to get through their workouts. I've never seen Pukie the Clown, but Lightheaded the Cheshhire Cat has shown up a few times!
Reading you about gymnastics.. I can't help but think...
I worked for 8 years (from 20 to 28yrs old) in a gymnasium that was (after the school kids had left) used for 4/5 of the canadian Gymnastics team of those years.. I knew the guys well.. and we were often at the same demonstrations ..
Their trainer (André Simard) was an ex-Olympian.. He helped me plan the gymnastics classes that I taught.. (amongst other sports) but mostly I saw them train every day.. them.. and gymnastics kids.. They were truely AWESOME.. André Simard later became a trainer for the Cirque du Soleil.. (which also had its roots from the same Gymnastics Club)
and even they didn't compare to when :
I saw Nadia Comaneci get her 10 on the uneaven parrallels at the Montreal Olympics.. I still have goosebumps remembering being there.. but I was 22 then.. and I think that things at the same time seem more "natural" AND mark us more at that age.
I got one muscle up on a bar followed by another about 5 minutes later.. My technique was not that good i managed to get one hand set at the top then used just strengh to force the rest of me up

VERY good! How did you prepare for it?
Maybe JP will start a badge system where we can earn merits for certain achievements! Then we can put our JP badges on our gym bags! Yeah, that's it...
"Yeah, badges on gym bags, great idea... great for me to POOP on!!!"
Sorry, couldn't resist. And the only way I could do a muscle-up is if there someone had a cattle prod to my nether regions. The nethers don't like high voltage.

I can do pullups with 70 lbs added on a weight belt and Dips with 110lbs added on. So i guess that was my general preparation. And I can do half of a true one armed pullup. It can probably be done without that much relative strength if one focuses on speed pullups. You need to generate a lot of pullup force to get on top of a straight bar.
I tried muscle ups this weekend in a really cool gym in Seattle, which was obviously put together by someone in to Crossfit. I can do chins all day, and I even did several sets of dips, but I couldn't cross the gap to do them both in one movement from a dead hang. I haven't tried them on a bar yet. I don't think it would be as hard though. I need to find a place to hang some rings... That much is clear. Frustrating finding out that there are exercises out there that I can't do!
How are we supposed to have merit badges for this if our fearless leader JP can't do 'em either
I tried a few bar muscle-ups yesterday and couldn't get one. Transitioning into dip position (getting the wrist up over the bar) is the sticking point. Soon...

I think wrestler is right that explosive strength might be the most important here, which bodes well for me. My overall strength is far from impressive, but my power (speed/strength) is quite good. Might have to give this a try this afternoon at the YMCA. Then I'll come back here with my tail between my legs, embarrased at my weakness and wondering why I have a tail.

you're a kid, you run to the high fence, jump up, grab on, pull yourself up, and squirm a bit, and hoist yourself up until your arms are straight, pushing down, and then swing a leg up top.
The difference with that is that you get the advantage of a jump. I did about 14 of those the other day while playing frisbee in the back yard of a friend's house. The fence was pretty high too! I can get into the dip position on rings, but I have to do a little swing or jump to get there. I can't just "muscle up" to that position.
I just read Lou's blog for today and he also used the term "nether regions", just like yours truly did regarding the area requiring electric stimulation in order to facilitate a muscle-up. I think that must be a sign of the apocalypse.
Get your muscle-ups in quick, folks... there's hayell-fire on the way, yeehaw!

You guys who tried in on the rings, did you try that "false grip" that the article shows? It says that's the key. My rings are scheduled to arrive on the 29th. I'll let you know how I did...NOT!
