Default Dumbell press on the floor...?

Hi guys, I've heard about this one before, but just wondering why it is good to perform? Its like a bench press, but yr lying on the floor.

Thanks
Ash

I found this info on EliteFTS.com

Dumbbell floor press
Muscles Targeted: Chest, shoulders and triceps

This one is a winner for many reasons:

It is a great lockout builder for the bench press.

It is great for those who have shoulder problems because of the limited range of motion and full shoulder stability (the floor is wider than a bench).

It is great for developing starting strength because of the pause and release at the bottom. You go from a static to dynamic contraction.

It is a great chest builder because most the work is done in the pec building zone of the dumbbell press.

PJB found a great summary. I do them because I have shoulder issues and the floor does not let me drop my elbows below parallel. Doing so puts the shoulder in a less than ideal position.

Can I ask you guys how you are getting larger DB's in place for the movement? I tried these a while back and found only 1 solution and I didn't care for it. I rested the DB on my chest while sitting and then rolled back. It was dangerous with any type of weight that was a challange. I ended up switching to Barbell floor press so my partner could place the bar in my hand while I was already in position. Any ideas? It was too hard to clean the weight up while sitting or lying down.

I had the same problem with db's newlife. I ended up using a barbell and a cage for the heaver weights.

For whatever reason in my work gym are two little collapsible stools (like director's chairs) that I can rest the DB's on their sides. I sit down between them and then tip them back as I lay down. Not very applicable for most gyms, but that's what I do if I'm not using the BB in the cage.

Larger is subjective... But, I set the 75s down on the floor and sit down between them. One at a time, I hoist each up onto my thighs. Then I lay back and bring my thighs up to push the dbs into the air. My elbows stay on the ground while I'm lying back, so I start the lift in the bottom position.

Just tell him you had the answer eight months ago but you wanted to wait and give it to him as a Christmas gift. Merry Christmas Newlife.

You'd lose out on the stretch at the bottom. That's an important part of the fly. You could still do them on the ground, as long as you know that, but the fly is already an exercise that only offers benefits within a limited range of motion. The bottom and up to about 45 degrees, you have the most tention, then physics screws us up and we start to lose tention as our arms get more vertical. Darn gravity!

To quote mAtThEw, Merry Christmas.

You guys don't have to write my name like that every time. Matthew is fine. Or Matt. My sister calls me Matty, but don't do that.

I don't mind it when someone I'm really close to calls me Matty, like my sister, or a cousin, or a close girl friend. Or if it's as a joke (no worries karky). Otherwise I like to be known as Matt or Matthew.

There's nothing wrong with Matty, but like everything else some people may like it and some people won't.

I did DB floor presses today because incline DB press was bothering my shoulder. I loved em. Will probably use them more often.
