Default How can they teach this.

Im in a first year fitness course at my university, just taking it for fun.

Today the topic came up for pre/post workout nutrition. The prof went on to say that before workout you want a high GI carb source like ramen noodles (who actually eats this stuff, its like a deep fried noodle) and the CHOCOLATE post workout. CHOCOLATE! Who eats chocolate after a workout!?

No amount given, nothing. Just "Eat chocolate after a workout" I'm going to talk to him tomorrow..

I saw this article being mentioned somewhere:

"Chocolate Milk May Improve Recovery After Exercise"

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/524370

You might want to use this in your conversation with your professor.

EDIT: If you want more info on this, you can do a google search for: chocolate milk recovery drink

I often drink chocolate milk for recovery and it works good for me. How many people do you think will translate that to mean pump out 3 sets of curls then eat 2 snickers bars?

Choc Milk is a great PWO drink, about 16oz should do it. It has the perfect protein/carb ratio. Definatly a welcomed change from gatorade/whey sometimes.

I drink chocolate milk after my workouts because A) I can't bring cereal to the gym - 1cup vector and 1 1/2cups milk is my first choice for a postworkout meal - and B) I HATE making shakes. I still haven't decided if I like chocolate milk or not yet, and I'm just a tad uncomfortable drinking it at the gym because I know there's someone thinking I'm crazy for having chocolate milk after a workout, wondering why I don't just have pizza or something.

On another note, I remember a long time ago in the mens health forums they promoted the candy Rockets for PWO carbs. They called them smarties, and I always thought they meant the candy coted chocolate smarties, but they posted a picture once and wouldn't you know the whole time they meant rockets. Anyone ever hear of this?

Also with the chocolate milk, I would say its good. But its mostly casein protien which is much slower burning, correct? Wouldnt it be better to maybe have a little bit of whey first before the milk?

Well, while I think the ratio and total protein/carbs/fat is the most important thing here, you have a point on the casein vs. whey. Doesn't Berardi suggest a half casein, half whey mix for post workout (especially for burning fat casein is supposed to be good, but not as good for anabolism.)?

isnt most commercially availible choc milk or even choc syrup not that ideal a source. seemed to good to be true, the ratio works well, but the sugars/carbs that make up the choc. part are sucrose, fructose, sometimes HFCS, and others, definately have never seen dextrose or maltodextrin as the primary sugar. i dont know, its better than a kit kat, but still, id rather have some regular milk with some other carb source, even if it isnt liquid.

Depends on your size and objective.

Yes, and the rationale is because the coating on those little sugar bombs are made of dextrose and the sugar in them (as well as chocolare syrup) is table sugar which is 50/50 glucose/fructose. Not that much of that matters because the body will turn it all into glucose. You can blend smarties in a shake or buy dextrose, maltodextrin, and some fruit to get the same sugars PWO, but whether you buy the powder or eat the smarties doesnt really make a difference.

Look up some posts of mine in the nutrition forum. THere is a difference in protein synthesis between different milk based proteins (whey, casein), but the difference is trvial, like a few minutes which is hardly going to shatter your gains. Dont forget that there is whey in milk to begin with.

Finally, you cant compare chocolate to a kit-kat because the nutrient composition isnt the same. Kit kats have fats and protein to them, whereas syrup doesnt.

I used to bang berardi's drum when I would take chemistry and nutition classes, but when I actually started reading berardi's sources and more research out there, as well as experimenting with dieting, I found how little the nutrient timing thing matters.

Actually post workout JB recommends a whey powder, for any other time of the day he recommends a whey/casein mix because of the different digestion (or whatever it is) times.

could you elaborate on this? or refer me to somewhere i could find sources to do more research of my own? Im where you were i guess, taking my classes and getting nutrient timing in wherever i can, ive been trying to follow it, dont know, maybe it works, maybe it works bc it gets me to eat clean? id like to know more.
