My Idea for a JP Fitness Forum Podcast
Hey guys. I had some free time today and started putting some ideas together. The thought that I had was a JP Fitness Forum Podcast. Here is what I wrote down:
- Have a group of 4 or 5 of the forum member get together on Skype (Free computer program, Teleconferencing through the internet)
-For this the participants would need to go out and get headsets that cost about $25-$30. Also they need a High speed internet connection like Cable or DSL. Other than that I can do the expensive part like audio editing software and the time to edit and encode.
-There would be a set 90 minute block where the participants would meet on Skype and discuss various topics that would be decided by forum member. Topics could range from various fitness programs (What are the participant’s favorites), Nutrition, Lifestyle, Healthy Recipes, and other Training topics. Basically what ever is relevant in the fitness/health world and what members of the forum what to talk about.
Also it would be great if it would be possible to have JP, possibly Craig Ballantyne and other trainers on occasion.
The length of the Podcast would be a 40-60 minutes depending on what we talk about and how long the conversations fun.
I want to state that I am not saying that I am starting this up. I am really just offering it out to the forum as away to come together and create more interaction between the members and create a better sense of community.
I am however willing to do all the work to get the podcast together as I have done some serious audio recording/editing while at school and am pretty computer savvy. Along with that I do know two guys who have put together a pretty nice podcast already. I promise to make it sound as professional as possible with the equitment we have. I would be able to see who we could get together to do the podcast, scheduling, the editing and be able to offer hosting for the podcast.
Really I think anyone who wants to participate in the podcast should be able to. I would love to have some of the veteran JP fitness member like Lost Dog, Gayla, cappuccino, BFG, Trainging Girl, Buk, Mahler, Kaiser, DKing, Marykaaand Gymrat.
Those are just a couple members I can remember off the top of my head. We could just see who can get together (depending on everyone’s schedules) and pick 4 or 5.
I am by no means the most knowledgable person on this forum BY FAR!!! So it would be great to get some of the best to participate.
Again this is an idea that I would love to see or put into motion myself. If people are interested we can get the ball rolling. Keep in mind to get everything organized and set up it will take a good 2 or 3 weeks.
So let me know what everyone thinks, ideas, opinions, ect. Especially would like to hear what JP thinks of this possibility.

We have a Skype phone, so for me it would be very easy to participate.
I am open to a phone conference whenever you set it up, let me know how to help.
I think the end of April will be a good time, because now everyone is busy with the retreat.

It is great to hear from you guys about this. I stayed up last night till about 2am getting some more of this together. I got everything I need on my end. I have a nice mic, headphones, a new soundcard (no needed but helped me out since I use a laptop), and got my $250 sound editing program up and running. I did a test skype recording with 2 friends and it worked perfectly.
I got it down that Marykaa, BFG and Galya are open to the idea. Again like I said really any one can participate if they want to contribute.
Keep the coments comming, I should have everything put together by tonight and the tweaks out. We could possibly do the first one next week. How is either friday, saturday, or sunday night after 7pm EST sounding??? Just let me know what would work for everyone and we can work somwthing out.

Thanks what its about, its mostly about the members of the forum and what we all have learned, along with some top notch fitness minds like Galya, JP and others.

Kevin,
Great idea. I'm definitely in if this gets off the ground. I will have to do some upgrades (DSL vs Dial Up) and get the required headset, but this may be the impetus to move into the 21st century. LOL
Thanks for all the leg work you are doing for this idea.

I like sunday better.. I often go out on fridays or saturedays.. but 7pm EST is like in the middle of the night for europeans.. so maybe friday or saturday would be better for BFG and Galya if they work on monday.. If I know a few days in advance I can surely make it Fridays or Saturdays.

I'd be all for listening to something like this, but I think the largest problem you are going to run into is....bandwidth. We've got a large base of members here that would probably listen to this if it was put together well and if you have say 500 people downloading a 40-50 meg file (going off of one of my other podcasts that's between .5-1 hour) your bandwidth costs would go right through the roof.
There is a place called thepodcastnetwork.com that I know is looking for podcasts so that might be something to check out if JP couldn't host it or didn't want to host it.
I think it's a great idea.

Thanks for the idea CD!! So far I looked into a few free hosting sites that could fit the needs of this. I believe that this isn't something JP or the members should have to pay for, it will be free. I am testing them out the next two days to see what is best. I will keep you all posted.
By the end of this week I will have a site set up for the podcast. It will be something simple and just mostly have the links to the downloads and the "Show Notes"

For file hosting right now there are a couple options that I am looking into.
First off is BitTorrent, this is the cheapest way to distribute the podcast. the only downfall is you must be somewhat tech savy. Basically installing a small program and clicking a link which is the "torrent file." This allows the user to connect to the host and download the file from them and in turn everyone basically shares the file with one and other.
For more info check this out:
http://www.bittorrent.com/intr oduction.html
The other main one is a GoDaddy.com account that would be able to support the amount of downloads we have, and would cost about $6.95 a month ( I will take the bill ).
I will be investigating more and contacting GoDaddy to see if they would be sufficiant. Any ideas for a domain name??? JPfitnesspodcast.com, fitcast.com, ect...

I would go the bittorrent route. Im computer retarded, but even i can download a program and a torrent file.
If thats not an option, you can host the file off of yousendit.com which lets you upload a file up to a gig in size. You can post the link, but it will expire after about 25 downloads or 7 days (whichever is first) but you can always reupload or have multiple links from people who already have the file.

Sounds like a cool idea, larrabee. I'd definitely be into listening to the podcasts.

Thanks for the input GqArtguy!! I have used Yousendit before and it is kind of a pain in the butt. I have pretty much decided on using godaddy for hosting and if anyone wants to offer up some of their bandwidth for supporting bittorrent that would be great, also they would get the podcast a day early.

I have done a little test recording to see how the set-up is working and to see how yousendit works out.
Please download the audio file and let me know how the download speed is and how the audio quailty is.
Here is the link:

Lastly it sounds like I have a lisp on the recording. It may be the headset or the recording program, but no bid deal.
