Default Rotational Lunges

Does anyone here doing one of Alwyn C.'s programs know the secret to doing rotational lunges (p 185 in New Rules)?

If you don't have the book at your fingertips, it's described as a walking lunge, except, "As you lunge forward with your left leg, rotate your torso to your left. Then rotate your torso to the right as you lunge with your right leg."

It seems tough to rotate your torso more than a few degrees (ok, a few tens of degrees), when the dumbbells hit your legs. I managed to clip both legs during some reps.

So, what am I doing wrong?

LOL
I wrote Lou and asked the same question.
It was so simple.
Hold a weight plate to your chest if you want to add weight to the lunge.

A large med ball also works well.

Can you here the "Doh!" (coming from Northwest of you). That line should really make it into the New New Rules.

Thanks Mahler!

I would love to get a "New Rules" forum going for the guys to share experiences and little tidbits like this.

Just post them here. Training logs are well and good, but I'd love to read summaries of workout experiences after people are done.

I've seen pics of them done with a med ball held out at arms' length (or sticking out a bit, at least). That would enhance the rotational effort.

I grabbed a dumbbell and held them at my chest as well.

And made sure to touch elbows to knees.

Interesting point (rotation vs lunge stress) Chris. I tried the plate-to-the-chest method, and found that my arms gave out before my legs did. My solution was to put a havier DB across my shoulders, like a squat. I got some wierd looks, but nothing compared to what I would have gotten using a full-size barbell.

So my question is - what do you all stress, the lunge or the rotation?

The new forum will have a "New Rules" subforum when we move over to the new vbulletin forum. Lou and Alwyn will of course be the forum leaders, hopefully with some moderation support of our very own Mahler.
