I tried them again but, as in the past, I do not like Good Mornings. I wanted to give them another shot since maybe they would work better for me now that I have a stronger back but I find them unnatural and uncomfortable. And I can really see how someone can get hurt. Not just your lower back but the cervical area of your spine if the weight slips, etc.

So, if I was to substitute...what would be best...there is a lot of deadlifting in the routine anyway and not as much shoulder work as I would like...so maybe I will sub a military press for example. Or should I not mess with it and stick with back work...like a low row, etc.? thanks guys!

Romanian DL's would be a good sub:

GM's are big hamstring and glute exersise done properly. RDL's have the same basic movement pattern imho just the position of the load is diff.

Other good posterior chain exercises are stiff-leggded deadlifts, romanina deadlifts, weighted hypers, reverese hypers, or pull-throughs.

While you can sub something like RDLs, it would be good to address your GM issues (unless they are bad back related, of course).

On off days or as a warmup, maybe do them with lighter weights and work your way up, over time.

Then, the next time a program with GMs comes along, you'll be ready.

Is there anything GMs give you that the other exercises do not? I ask, b/c frankly I just don't like doing GMs. The weight across my shoulders and back doesn't ever feel right. It's funny b/c I enjoy squats and have no issues with the bar resting on my shoulders then.

Cable Pull-Through. CB had that exercise in my workout (which is very similar to Barely Legal) and we decided to use Good Mornings instead. So, the reverse should be just as effective. We changed it mostly to remove pressure on my shoulders.

I suppose you could it this way but I learned it from Mike Mejia's S2B where you keep your arms at a 90-degree angle to your torso throughout the entire movement. Either way, I'm sure it's an acceptable sub for Good Mornings.
