Need some motivation
After I trashed my back I had to take a hiatus from the gym. After 1.5 months I was able to return and have been back for a month now. My problem is motivation. Before I used to roll out of bed at 4:30am, drank a bit, then ran to the gym. Now it's a chore, I sleep through the alarm, arrive later than I need to then sort of go through the motions without the same intensity.
I've been working a lot (70hr+ weeks) for the past 6 weeks. Home life is ok, if I'm not there we can't disagree. I don't feel sick or depressed, just...bleh.
I'm still going 3 days/week but need a boost. Hit me up!

Theres your problem, although I think you already know that . I'll be you're not getting sufficient recovery which leads to overtraining. Try to squeeze as much sleep in as you can, might mean missing some stuff you normally do, but it'll get you over the hurdle.
F-Woman, my god I'm going to have some bad dreams now you bastard BeachHead.

Re: Need some motivation
The work thing won't change until late March. I have to bring a new agency online and the person who was supposed to do this quit (biatch). Last night I did talk my boss into giving me more travel funds so I can spend the night at this remote, it sucks having to drive 3 hours each way to a job. :P
Last night I crashed around 10pm. Slept until almost 8am, which I haven't done in years.
I'm gonna look over my exercise plan today, I think I'll go back to HGM for a bit, those were always good.
Thanks for the help. And Bulldog, you always type in caps!

Re: Need some motivation
You don't want us to motivate you. You want us to tell you to get to the gym or you will become a big fatty. Well, that is just common knowledge. Motivation comes from within. You have to want it, you have to do it so you are the one who needs to go get it. We can't motivate you. We can't pull your covers down and make you get up, we can't tie your little sneakers on your feet and no, we can't lift the weights for you. But here is the deal, what we can do. We can have passion for life, we can have the passion to be the best and we can have the passion to beocme a little better each day. And yes, we can, will and DO have the passion to be better than ANY one who can't get out of bed, can't call it a day and can't make a personal decision to be better. It is your decision to be made. I just ask that if you make the wrong one, you find a way to deal with the guilt! Tomorrow when I get up I will be better than I was today. Afterall, being the best is not about beating everyone else, it is about being better than you were yesterday!

Re: Need some motivation
quite simply ya want to get back to where ya were before, well if that was a gruelling schedule its gonna take a huge kick up the butt to get back into so break it down a little. Why not allow yourself some fun time back at the gym. Ie not structured no programme shock horror! Just get your arse in there get stuck in and mess around with the weights and the treadmill you'll soon get the bug again if not watch the waiste band expand and then come back n say yikes where do I start!!!

Re: Need some motivation
I'm right there with ya! Sometimes I need motivation just to get going to workout. Once I'm there, it's okay, though. I finally switched back to TT workouts, which don't take as long. I even tell myself that the intervals are optional. This way, it's easier to motivate myself to get up and go to the gym. Once I'm there, I often find myself spending the extra few minutes on the intervals, as well. A few weeks of this, and I got my motivation back.
I also hurt my back, so I modified my workouts to eliminate Squats, DLs, RDLs, GMs, etc. Mostly lunges, step-ups, leg curls, etc.
Also, a workout is just what you need to cut some stress during or after a long day. Find a gym at the remote work location and swing a deal for a pass for a few weeks with the gym. You could expense the gym and buy food at the grocery store, instead. It could actually save your company money... If it's per diem, you might just have like $25 per day for "meals." No receipts needed, usually. Depends on the policy.
Instead of eating lunch, workout and eat while you work.
Do you workout at home or a gym, normally?

Re: Need some motivation
I was cleaning house this morning and the mrs said "why don't you go work out". I had been up a while, was beat from cleaning but hit it anyway. The gym was freaking packed but the free weight area was dead. Got in and went for it. Did most of my old HGM routine, even the parts I didn't like. It was great, I left there feeling pumped. Even more pumped when I saw a doc I used to work with who told me I was looking good.
Someone was curling in the cage, I asked the Y if they'd put a sign up. Was gonna jog on the treadmill, there was a line. A line of amazing buns, which was enjoyable mostly.
I might start hitting the gym around 10am M/W/F, I felt much better that I'd been awake and fed a while.

Re: Need some motivation
Things are going to be tough with the amount of work and stress, and the accompanying recovery issues (which is mental recovery, as well as physical). The change in workout time sounds like it worked. I've read that most people's bodies are more primed for working out in the aftenoon. No doubt, being up, more mentally alert and NOURISHED can help alot. The fact that you're trying to keep at it, rather than just cash it in until the start up is done, takes some motivation in and of itself. Be patient and do the best you can. Once you can get back to normal schedule, things will improve.

Re: Need some motivation
LD: I work out at a Y. At one of my job sites there is a Y nearby, I'm paying them a visit to see of they'll give me a cheap pass since i'm there 8x/mo and already pay here in town. This new remote has no Y only a gym at some resort, I might flash my badge to see if they'll let me in.
Expensing it sounds like a plan but I work for the State. It took 6 weeks of my beating on my boss just to get him to approve hotel for me. Meals wise I'm cheap, I get like 35/day and do the hotel for breakfast, a coffee house (the barista is unbearably hot and they have good sandwiches) and whatever is open for dinner. I have no idea how the hell anyone can live that far out, it's 3 hours to a frigging MALL.
I might toss some weights in the car so I can workout during the day, at least do curls and the like.
Chris: Yeah, I'm starting to realize that after a day of lounging around. The guy I who handles the area to the east of me is retiring soon, I'll be doing, oh, everything west of 77 in NC. I might retire also.
zzz time.

Re: Need some motivation
castufari,
Sometimes when we are pressed and our schedules get hectic, like yours, the first thing we eliminate to save time or lighten the load is the thing we need the most. You NEED the time in the gym, for your health and your sanity. The insane hours you work may come to an end, but your health and fitness will carry you through that and a lot more. It's for life, my friend. Don't shortchange yourself.

Re: Need some motivation
Hey man. You might want to do some bodyweight stuff for a little while until your schedule gets back in order. Criag has a TT body weight routine. I think Gobbla has a log in the training log section if you want to check it out. I also agree with Mahler that you need the time in the gym for you and you only. It takes you away from work and home both physically and mentally if only for an hour or two. Good luck.
