Hey, I know I posted this topic in the nutrition part, but I'm afraid not as many people check that board out. Anyways, my question is I know I should take Glut after my workout and before I go to bed. Should I take it on days I don't work out? Thanks.
The two claims of taking Glutamine are decreased recovery time and boosting your immune system. I don't believe in the recovery time part, but there are guys that swear that they have had fewer colds and no bouts with the flu while taking it.

Do you often get sick with colds and the flu? I have noticed that over the last two years since I made my health and fitness a major priority in my life, I have had very few colds or sore throats. My experience is that eating healthy, lifting, and resting like many of here do lead to much fewer sicknesses than the average person. Anyone else have this experience?
Exactly. Since adopting a very clean diet and exercising regularly, I've had less colds and sore throats. My blood pressure, heart rate, and cholesterol have all dropped to very healthy levels. My acid reflux disappeared, etc. Most supplements are heavily promoted from some study that showed a great effect in some lab and they usually don't pan out in real world testing. Creatine is about the only supplement that has been proven to have real world results in the last twenty years and I really can't say that I've noticed an effect from it but my workout partner does ...
just about all the glutamine will be absorbed by the gut. the supplement companies and the "experts" made a huge deal that glutamine will help you to build "hoooge" muscles. but that has turned out not to be the case. but those who have problems with their gut will receive some benefit with it.
Moreover, your gut is one of the most important parts of your immune system. Specifically, your gastrointestinal tract has a large number of immune cells along its length — including macrophages, lymphocytes, and fibroblasts — and is constantly working to protect you from ingested bacteria. Cells in your gastrointestinal tract are constantly being replaced, which requires a constant provision of amino acids (such as glutamine).
Because of their importance in protecting against bacteria, these cells (such as macrophages, lymphocytes, and fibroblasts) can end up at the front of the glutamine "queue" at the expense of your muscles. The importance of glutamine as a fuel for your gut might also explain its effect on the strength of your immune system.
thats a cut and paste by christian finn. you can find the same write ups by bryan haycock and alan aragon.
Same idea with digestive enzymes but I've noticed that the only people that they seem to help are the ones that don't eat properly to begin with. Still sounds like a waste. Just eat right. Some of these products would be useful if you're on an extreme diet and therefore not able to get the proper nutrients from real food.
I take it. have been for past 2 years. no colds or flus in that period. could be coincidence (doubt that, i used to be good for 3-5 per year), placebo effect (this is a definate possibility) or it may be that it actually boosts the immune system (or at least mine...might not work for all people). either way, i'm liking the no sickness thing.
now a days, i drink ICE 1/2hr pwo, & it's in that. if yer unsure about wasting money on raw glut, buy ICE or some other shake that has it in there already. when everyone here in cubeland starts sneezing, coughing, etc, i take a teaspoon of glutamine that nite. they're all sick (good job flu shot!), i'm not. fwiw, i don't take flu shots.
the problem right now is there is lack of scientific evidence that it works.
if you are prone to catch whatever is going around (like i was) & can spare the extra coin, give it a try. if sickness isn't an issue with you, don't waste yer money on it.
Well I got about 300g still left over and since it takes a while to go through it, looks like I'll be takin it for the next 6 months or so. Oh well. As long as it doesn't harm me, my money is already spent, so may as well use.

i used glutamine years ago but stopped when it was explained to me that the protein powder i'm using (ON whey) has a good dose of it and i take it twice a day (pre and post workout).
also cottage cheese is a good source of it too and i eat that once or twice a day. i have problems with my gut, digestion however its referred to so i did notice an improvement when i used it.
Also, I don't know where you guys heard that Glutamine helps you fight colds, etc. The description on my GNC brand glutamine says it helps in protein synthesis. Is this correct?
