Question

Hey all,

First post in the Training Discussion forum!

Coming back to a lifting regime after a long time off. Still in shape though, was really active in climbing(ice, rock, alpine), cycling, hiking, etc.

In my search for a routine I wound up on this routine. My focus would not be size gain (although i'm sure i will gain a bit). I'm mainly looking for a program for maximum strength gain and fat loss.

So i'm looking for any feedback on the routine, did it work, does it suck, etc...

Also a bit of explanation into the program. Just by looking at the first PDF ( http://www.menshealth.com/newbody/phase1_b.pdf), i'm guessing there are only two full body workouts a week, where one would do all three triads in one workout with three sets of each set of exercises?

Am I right or wrong? Or is it 6 workouts a week where a triad represents a workout?

Any clarification and feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

First of all I'm on the last Phase of HGM and I have loved it. It's definitely been a great program for me physically as well as mentally. I've learned alot.

For the 1st phase you'll workout 3 times a week. 2 triads each day. Have fun, the first phase is a doozy.

That is for the advanced, I think he is doing the beginner which is 3 triads 2x week.

Hi Mountain Marc - welcome!

I finished HGM in June - it's a tremendous program for what you're looking for - especially Phase 1. The Beginner workout in Phase 1 is as you described - two workouts a week. The Intermediate/Advanced for Phase 1 is three workouts per week.

The program is divided into 10 phases, all but two of which are 4 weeks long - the other two are 8 weeks each. Every phase is different in approach and incorporates a different training style.

One thing that's basically pretty consistent throughout is the intensity. Every phase uses a prescribed rest period between exercises/sets, and staying to the rest period increases the intensity of the workout above what the casual lifter would do on his/her own. (So, you're burning serious calories and fat!)

Also, several of the phases incorporate sprinting as well.

Try Phase 1 for sure - most people who have done the program really like it - my guess is you will also.

Good luck!

Pete
