Hey guys, i just ordered scrawny to brawny today! w00t! although im a little unsure about its affects since i'm a long distance runner and will be running cross country. Granted, I want to gain more muscle mass - that is for sure. but will i even be able to gain while running 60+ miles a week?

Your body is constantly breaking down proteins for energy. That's why marathon runners are so skinny!
Personally, I don't think S2B is a good choice for you (others may disagree).
If you're wanting to gain and maintain muscle and also keep up the running I'd look into the following things;

Branched Chain Amino Acids
Protein, protein & protein
Lots of Gatorade (you want your body to burn
glucose, not the energy stored
in your muscles)
Lots of carbs
&
Don't lift on the days you run, one session will counteract the other if done on the same days.

But then again, this is all suggestions. I don't know if it's possible to bulk up while maintaining a 60 mile/wk long distance running regime.

With running 60 miles a week I don't think I can add up the calories you would need to consume to gain mass. You might try the running forum. Some of those guys might have some solid answers. My long distance running days are long since over.

I agree with Anubis: I don't think the program in the book is the right thing for you. It is built to be used as the primary workout with an option of a couple of cardio days (I think the book recommends HIIT) on the off days.

If you're seriously training for distance then give that goal your all. Again as Anubis says, you can improve you diet and maybe throw in a couple of weight training days, but wait until the off season so you can make a concerted effort at bulking. Otherwise you might just end up spinning your wheels and getting nowhere with either goal and burning out on top of it.

kk, thanks for the advice//info. Waiting till the off season seems to be the best bet. I already need to be consuming 5000 calories just for running and living, heh.. that would mean even more to gain muscle... which would be quite difficult.

again, thanks

Anecdotally, I can tell you you've got a real challenge on your hands. I ran a March marathon which took me up to around 60 mpw nearing the final 6 weeks of the training schedule. I ate anything and everything I could get my hands on ('clean' foods mostly), and after about 35 mpw, I started losing weight. You'll be able to attain some great strength improvements, but a mass gaining goal at 60 mpw is probably going to be close to impossible.

Are you a competitive cross country runner? Lean mass is almost always good, but if posting competitive times in endurance races is your primary goal, you don't really want any excess weight above your healthy optimum, fat or muscle.
