I do, but mixed with water. I know, not as nice. Actually the protein dosnt hurt a good diet at all (in moderation). Ive been drinking 20g before/during and 20g after my workouts.
Im trying desperatley to drop 30 pounds, and add lean muscle at the same time...
I say it dosnt hurt if you have your diet and routine planned out well.
Protein shakes are a great way to keep your protein intake up while cutting. Just make sure you watch your caloric intake (with all of you foods), including the protein mix into the equation. Most protein scoops I have seen are around 100 calories per serving.
Assuming you are following a weight lifting routine, then "absolutely!"
You should have a drink of carbs and protein that you sip before, during, and after your workout.
The goal, while trying to lose weight, is to keep and shape the muscle that you've already got. A drink of carbs and protein has been proven in many studies to help maximize your workout AND help to maintain muscle mass.
You can certainly choose your own style of diet, but make sure to check out the "Adam's Diet" threads at the top of the nutrition forum. At the very least, it gives a good rundown on the workout drink, no matter what type of diet you choose to follow.
As to when else to have a protein drink... I'd say to rely on real food for the most part. A protein drink will only keep me full for an hour at the most (no matter how big of a drink).
I do keep some pre-measured vanialla protein powder, flavored with some Crystal Light powder for "emergencies." I keep it, ready to just add water, in a dry shaker in my car. It's for those times when I just can't find healthy food to eat and I'm needing something. Other than the rare use of this emergency stash and workouts, I obstain from the powder and eat something "whole food," instead. I have nothing against it, it just doesn't keep me full.
Was the original post refering to possibly the fact that Whey, being such a fast acting/absorbed protien, may hinder cutting?
Personally, I think you should definately stick with it for pre/during/post workout, try avoiding it at all other times of the day....hypocritically though, i usually have a scoop in my oatmeal for breakfast, just to add some protien.. otherwise, go with whole foods, with more varieties of protien.

Hmm... thanks guys. I'll keep everything in mind. I usually have a post workout shake consisting of low carb grape juice, 5 strawberries, and 2 scoops of protein (40-50g).
Like I said, I'm 6', 260lbs, so losing weight is what I'm trying to concentrate on the most right now, while creating more muscle.
I'll be sticking around here a lot and posting often.
