Default Summit Travel Food Ideas?

I'll be travelling to the JPF summit on Thursday and returning next Monday. On the travel days, I would like to remain as compliant with Plan A as humanly possible. As I leave REALLY early from home and am travelling a good chunk of the day to get from Vancouver to LR, I will probably be having to grab food in airports and/or eat snacks I take with me. I am hampered in the latter respect by security issues and crossing the international border (fresh food restrictions).

Any ideas as to food options to get me through this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I remember right, fruit and veggies are not allowed across the border, right?

Best ideas I can think of are string cheese and jerky. You could bring a shaker cup and some protein powder and add water at the airport drinking fountain (I'm assuming you have some connecting flights).

Slim Jims, jerky, nuts, cheese sticks, etc.

Last time I flew, I found a couple of bags of turkey pepperoni that didn't need to be refrigerated until opening. I took one bag for there and one for the flight back. They are supposed to be refrigerated after opening, but each bag was two meals worth and I wasn't too worried about 3-4 hours of opened time after breaking into the bag. Oh, bring a mint...

Also, lots of fancy cheese is sold at room temp at the market. I assume it's fine until opened up, too (and for 3-4 hours afterward. It's cheese for God's sake... ). These cheeses are pricier, but pretty tasty. Bring a mint...

Most of the time, you can by some fruit at the airport. I know it's not TNT compliant, but I usually make an exception for an apple instead of my veggies when I'm traveling. Raw veggies are harder to find.

This is the sort of stuff I travel with. Beings diabetic now the airline snacks are totally off plan. And besides the FAs always are intrigued as I get out my jerky (make sure its not added sugar), and Costco extra salty smokey almonds (Eades says we have systems overbuilt to cope with sodium), and roasted Cashews. They are all OK to go through customs. Veggies just have to fend for themselves while I am in the air, I generally figure out how to eat veggies regardless of where I am. The Philippines was the hardest - had to go to Malls and have salad.

I actually travel with a small soft cooler with pre-cooked chicken. An ice pack (gel) keeps the chicken for the entire day. I pack 3 (5 oz) bags of cut up chicken. I cut up peppers and cucumbers as well and pack them. Then I do a couple of bags of almonds as well. This generally does me for trips and the bag is really quite small and fits at the top part of my carry on. I don't do TNT so I also have Kashi cereal (dry) stuffed somewhere as that is always a good food.

Not the best strategy but I can't taken anything through the various airports so it's eat as I'm go for me. I there to have fun, if a burger + fries or pizza is part of that..so be it

Thanks for all the input - some good ideas there. I like Karla's soft cooler idea ... I'm just not sure about what I can take across the border food-wise. I should probably just check out the US customs/agriculture website. More homework ...

do you have to change planes in the US where you actually would be entering with the food - or can you eat it all on the plane and have nothing left to declare as an agricultural product?

I take food into pretty much all the countries I travel into. I was supposed to declare it for China but I didn't. Of course it makes better sense for you to check the restrictions. Worse case is you have to dump some of it when you deplane.

I like your spirit, Rob. However... It's really a lot of work for one day there and one day back. I'm assuming you're eating more "normal" food with the rest of us, right?

Just eat more normal food during travel and go with amounts that are less than would make you super fat overnight. Assuming you're eating carbs over the weekend, you're not losing out on much if you keep eating under your calorie levels, anyway.

Eat breakfast at home, some meat and nut based snacks, a small normal lunch or more snack foods, an afternoon snack maybe, then the summit fun starts on thursday night.

I doubt they'll let you bring gel packs on board. You can't bring a bottle of outside water on a plane. Blue gel looks pretty sinister by comparison.

I was thinking about this. You could probably get something compliant at one of the airport food courts. You might have to get a bit inventive, like ordering a cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato and discarding the bun. Getting enough veggies can be a bit of a problem, but most places have salad of some type.

Just for the record, I was in pretty good shape going down to LR. After clearing US customs and security in Vancouver, I picked up a salad with chicken from one of the stands which was quite good on the plane. I also bought a big bag of salmon jerky from one of the tourist stands, which I munched on throughout the flights. Coming home was not so good but, like Roland said, I just tried to keep the cals a bit lower than normal. After the Waffle House breakfast, I figured the day was pretty much shot anyway.

On the way out (despite my ribbing to Rob), I ate hardboiled eggs, apples, and nuts.

On the way back, I gave away my lunch to a homeless guy digging in the trash. He was very polite and didn't ask for anything, so guilt got to me. Three hardboiled eggs, nuts, two huge apples, trailmix, and... wait for it... SCORE! three of Kaiser's energy drinks!

So, I ate two Whopper Jrs, 1/2 the buns. Mmm... buuuuuurger...
