Arrow BEST AEROBIC TRAINING EVER!

I gave up running about basketball basically 10 years ago to protect the joints although I've dabbled in both since... just not to the extent as before. So, I've always been looking for good aerobic alternatives. I stationary bike some and will use a HIIT routine vs long, drawn out "rides."

In the snorkel thread, I had a picture of one designed especially for lap swimming. I never bought one but I did (finally) try just a regular snorkel. IT WORKED GREAT! I still wear the usual swim goggles but I just hang a snorkel over one shoulder and it allows me to up the intensity as much as I want with no pounding on the knees or back. I sometimes think the snorkel needs to have a greater diameter to accommodate the amount of wind I'm sucking! It really is great because I can get a very intense workout in with none (?) of the negatives that running or cycling cause.... plus I'd just rather be in the water sometimes. I read (posted?) that, as you get older, intense workouts help to lessen the drop in metabolism that occurs naturally so that's my intent.

Now, I just need an underwater iPod!

I just need to get Mrs. Q. to let me spend the money! Actually, I think it would be distracting. Since I don't do the long swims anymore, I'm probably better off focusing on trying to get the most out of each lap. When I swim for intensity, it's not at all boring like regular lap swimming.

I think it would be distracting too....I swim a lot but never just straight swimming...for instance yesterdays workout; one of the main sets was
5(3x100) on a fast pace time desc each 100 within the set. The total distace was 1500 meters for the whole set, but the intensity was kept pretty high.

I think if I wore an Ipod it would have been hard to concentrate on the task at hand. But that my just be me.

How is the swim snorkling going Q? are you able to flip turn with it on and then blow out the water once surfaced again or are you just doing open turns?

No flip turns yet. Even though I've never had a problem with my nose, breathing through the snorkel requires concentration to not suck water up your nose as you breath in. It's gotten a lot better fast but I normally don't flip turn anyway since I'm not in this for competition training. I just swim because it feels so good (when you're done!) and I enjoy this form of exercise.
