Default swimming and strengthening

just curious to know any exercises or strenthening techniques that are good for swimming. i was watching the navy swimmers last night at the pool laying on their backs with their legs hanging off a ledge and just kicking for several minutes then jumping in the pool and swimming a couple laps then out and kicking again. it went on for an hour. i can't imagine how rough that is on the abs, glutes, and legs.

so what i was thinking would be good for developing strength would be:
Push press, shoulder press, rows, lat pulldown, cable cross, squats and a variety of ab workouts. are there any others that would be really good for swimming or any of these that shouldn't be done?

My squad does 1 lap, jump on deck and do 10 push ups x 10... it totally knocks you out when you do it with speed.

Swimming is a tough sport to train for outside of the water, but I have heard that pull ups are fairly sport specific because of the motion of the back and arms involved. If you are planning on doing long distance swimming, working the aerobic system will help out and vice versa for shorter distances

We just had the australian olympic trials. The lats on the sprinters are huge. One girl is doing pullup reps with 32.5kg (72lb) additional weight.

When designing a swimming workout think about what movements are performed in the pool and train the opposite muscles. This is more a rehab/prehab training though.
