Question Need a Swimming Workout

Hi there! I hear this is THE spot of fitness advice.

First, let me start off my saying, I hate exercise. I especially hate exercise that is obviously exercise. When someone asks me to join them for a game of hand ball, I'm down, but doing gym exercises is dreadful.
For this reason, I decided to get back to my roots. As a child, I was always in the pool, so I think I would enjoy swimming best, as my cardio.

I was hoping someone could set me up with an awesome swim routine. Maybe something that takes 45min give or take.

I can swim breast, free, back (although i'm always going crooked) and hoping to improve my butterfly. Also, I am 23 yrs old and about 130 lbs, so hoping to shed some lbs with this as well. Would prefer to focus on slimming down my legs also.

I need an outlined routine, and I also need to know by how much to increase the routine each week.

Any help, helps!

Thanks,
Victoria

Hmm, so quick too judge "Nothing"

There are a guys here with lots of knowledge, but posting in this forum can be sporadic...:p

I would say look around for perhaps a masters swim team, and try a workout or two with them perhaps?

To determine a workout for you, a couple of things are required:

Technique would be a high one on the list. We know what you can swim, but how do you swim ? Are you smooth and efficient, or choppy and all over the place with the stroke? Without proper technique you can risk nagging injuries.

What speed you are swimming at? People always say they swim fast or can do a length faster then any of the other people in the pool, but you must look at your speed honestly.

How your endurance levels are: Are you able to do 100's (4 lengths of the pool) on a given time..say like 2 minutes or 3 minutes. How may times can you swim 100's?

Since you are just starting back, I would not do a structured workout, pe say, maybe some lengths to warm up, then some drills...you can get drills from Q's link, or USMS.org should have some tips, then move on to kicking, and then a warm down.

Set up your workout so the distances challenges you, but not fatigues you to the point that you lose technique or end up just giving up.

something like this perhaps, without knowing anything about you

200 warm up (Easy swimming)
300 Drill (concentrating on proper technique)
200 Kick
300 warm down (Really easy swimming)

That is 1000 Meters/Yards

I am not sure if this helps and I am sure that others will correct me if I steered you wrong...but at least someone responded to your post.

Sorry we were unable to meet your request for a custom tailored swimming program within the allotted time frame. A good gym workout might just help you with your obvious stress issues.

BTW, sounds like you want to play in the pool. If we gave you a well-tailored workout it would probably start looking like exercise and that would just piss you off. But we wouldn't want to make you angry so we will remain silent. Have a good day.

thanks swiminto!! I appreciate your response. I think the exercises you outlined sound like a good idea. I will try them out at the pool today.
I think technique is my highest priority. I have been watching many swim videos to make sure that I am improving my techinique.
I'm not super fast either, although, with the right techinique, I would ideally like to be.
Part of the reason I am not very fast, is also the last thing you mentioned, which is endurance. Not so hot is this area. I definitely need to build up my endurance. It's a bit of a catch 22 though, with my dislike for exercise.

As for the rest of the replies...
Q... you're from where? Texas.. right... figures... Oh! and I'm sorry that you couldn't think of a clever 'username' so instead you had to bash mine.
ODB... i'm not a firecracker like you think, although i wouldn't suggest driving poorly around me, it would definitely result in yelling, screaming and honking. Also, i am not looking to just 'play in the pool', as my request for a structured workout makes clear.

p.s. don't be so sensitive, ya'll [that's how it's said right? ]
