I am fairly slow as I am just a 45 year old lap swimmer who has had no real technique training. On a good day I can do ONE 50 meter lap in about 39-40 seconds (based on the big second hand clock at the pool). On my normal lap swim I do about 50 laps (2500 meters) in 1 hour, which is an average of 70 seconds per 50 meter lap.

It's been a while since I clocked it but I think I could do one lap at about the same pace... followed by a lot of catching of breath! I'm a sometimes lap swimmer but eight years older. I've been swimming more lately but, over time, I go back and forth.
Yo fellas, been a long time since I have posted..sorry, but I have been out of the pool for a bit.
I am not in anyway near the form I was, but recently (2 months ago)we did a set of 20 100's in a 50 meter pool on a 1:30 pace...I was holding 1:15-1:25....so that is what between 38 and 43 seconds per 50.
Milk, you must churn some serious waves when training.

Maybe it was just one length in 20 secs... my turns are slow so I think I was remembering wrong.
My recent triathlon times had me going at a decent clip.
Boulder Peak - 24:51 for a 1.5KM swim, so 1:40 per 100
Boulder Sprint - 12:38 for a 750m swim, so 1:28 per 100
That's not my top end, but close. In races, I try to find a comfortable pace since I have a bike and run to follow. If it was just a swim, I could probably kick it up a gear.

Haha. I haven't swum in well over a month now, and even then I wasn't training much. My best event was the 500 free when I was competing, and I did that in 4:30.01. If I hadn't trained with mono my junior/senior (unknowingly, of course) year of college, it would have been fun to see that time drop into the low/mid 4:20's. But "would have" != "did"... so I'm eternally stuck at 4:30.01.
The coolest race I ever did was an open-water 5k in Racine, Wisconsin. I crossed the finish line at a shade over 51 minutes.
I was never much of a sprinter before, but now I've bulked up quite a bit (25 lbs, mostly lean, in a little over a year) and my O2 efficiency has gone to shit... so if I do anything it's gotta be shorter distances. I'm toying with the idea of training for some 100's and 200's to compete at Illinois Master's Championships next spring, but that might be a problem since I'd have to get in a pool first!

best 50 m time was 23.2 in high school. my stroke definately took a hit after 50 m though, my 100 time was 54

I skipped the fish oil syrup this morning, but I used BCAA creamer in my coffee. Hopefully that will compensate enough to prevent muscle loss.-RedLefty

You mean 50yd? That kind of 50m time would put you top-25 nationally.
Just what I was thinking.
He'll you'd probably make our national squad without too muchg trouble

Holy crap mikeall08, your 100 breast is only a second slower then your 100 free? That is some fast breastroking, well to this old guy it is. I swam in the era when the minute barrier for the 100 meter breast was still unbroken.

haha whoops, definately meant 50y and 100y times there. sorry for the confusion.

Now? Probably clocking in at 35-40s for the 50s. I haven't done a timed run in awhile. Will do it with the next swim.
The free wasn't my specialization - 100m and 200m back was, but I competed in almost everything. Could say I was an all-rounder but the breaststroke started to dwindle (extremely flexible ankles?) and would drag my IM time down.
I am a slow guy. I just got back in to the water over the last couple of weeks, ie once two weeks ago and once last week.
I'm not honestly sure what my time is but I think I was around 1:12 for the 50. Not a sprint though, thats about what I can do over a 500 as well.
The short triathlon I swam I did 500m in just over 12 I think.

I was always a sprinter. Best 50 yd Freestyle was 23.5 and my best 100 was in the 52s somewhere. Butterfly was also pretty strong at 26.3 for 50 yds. I don't recall the 100 fly time. I did the 100 yard I.M. in 57. All of this was right around 16-17 years old. Doubt I could come close to those numbers with my extra mass (read fat).
i am trying to get my 1.5k swim in under 30 minutes. i am coming in at about 34 minutes right now so i have some work to do. but hey if i get close i will be happy. i just learned to do a crawl like 3 months ago so i don't think its too bad. before that i was putting the free back in freestyle by just flailing about from one end of the pool to the other.
so i guess that pace is just over a 1 minute lap (50 yd).
