As a pure swimmer, this may be problematic, but in a triathlon, this is ideal. The idea is to save your legs for the bike and run.

I'm not familiar with #1, but I envision #2 as related to kayaking. You don't pull your paddle through water, you pull your kayak to the paddle entry point. If you truly pulled your arms "through" the water, you wouldn't go anywhere. It is your body that you are pulling through the water. #3 I think has to do with rotation driving you through the water, but than again isn't that the same as #1?
