As a distance guy, I hate when people get all starry-eyed about sprinters... but Auburn has 4 unbelievable guys on their top relay.
Their 200 freestyle relay just went a 1:14.71. The old record was 1:15.78, so they absolutely smashed it. The splits were 18.69 (flat start, new NCAA record), 18.71 (top 20 relay split in history), 18.69 (another top 20), 18.62 (ditto, but probably top 5). Amazing. Unreal. I'm out of superlatives.
... And I had the privilege of training with these guys for a couple of summers!

The actual conversion is always a little fishy IMO, because depending on the swimmer's individual strengths and weaknesses, a converted time from short-course swimming might never be attainable in long course (and vice-versa). Conversions are basically something we can't accurately determine, because short course and long course swimming are two entirely different things when discussing something like the 50.
In terms of what we actually can determine though, 18.69 for a 50y swim means that his average speed (in terms of miles per hour... or km/hr for you weirdos) qualifies him as the fastest human being ever to swim a measured, timed race from a flat start.
It's pretty unreal.

Yeah, one thing to remember in the conversion is that a short course (yards) 50 would mean a turn in the middle which actually adds some speed (if you're good). On the long course it is one length.

WOw..that is one frigging quick relay..but now, I am wrapping my head around this....
"Michael Phelps posted the almost unbelievable time of 1:43.86 in the 200 freestyle Tuesday night at Rod Laver Arena. That swim dipped under Thorpe's 2001 record of 1:44.06, set at the 2001 World Champs in Fukuoka, Japan. "

That is insane speed.
Phelps is just in an entirely different league. I hope he stays healthy (and motivated) for the 2008 games in Beijing, because I fully believe he can break Spitz' record for most gold medals in a single Olympics.
Edit: and for those of you who may not be aware, that time posted by Phelps was indeed in LCM competition.

As a teenager, I was glued to the TV watching Spitz win his gold medals. As an old fart, I'll do the same next year to watch Phelps!

100m fly - 2nd (Crocker)
200m fly - 1st (WR)
200m IM - 1st (WR)
400m IM - 1st (WR)
200m Fr - 1st (WR)
400m Fr - 4th (I think, to Thorpe, Hackett, and Keller)
200m Bk - 2nd (Piersol)
With no more Thorpe, an aging Hackett, an off-and-on Keller, and a somewhat inconsistent Piersol... Phelps has a real shot to not only beat Spitz' record of 7 total gold medals, but in fact he could damn well win 7 *individual* golds in Beijing. Add on 3 more relays (which should be as good as any other team in olympic competition), and you're talking about the potential for 10 golds in a single olympics.
If he could pull that off, it would be without a doubt the most dominant individual performance in the history of any sport, IMO.

He's a badass. Plain and simple - and of course all the sports talk shows are saying swimming "isn't a real sport", comparable to golf, etc. I think swimming is ABSOLUTELY a sport, as is golf, and I freaking tired of these guys blasting a sport this is not one of the Big 4.
Phelps is destroying the swimming world right now, and he will continue to do so in Beijing. I can't freaking wait.

Most of those who say it's not a sport don't know how to swim. How is it different than track or cycling? Of course we could all be talking about our bowling scores!

Sorry I had to call it, before you guys started comparing "Endorsement Sizes"....
Anyways, I am curious to know what Phelps felt after the USA relay was DQ'd and he was denied the chance to win his 8th GOLD of the meet. Did he give a press conference?
Also...what about Thorpe now and the "Above normal level" allegations, I am hoping he sues that paper, for the damage done. Just my opinion though.
