Thumbs down May have to QUIT swimming for a while

Still have 5 lbs from before Christmas plus the 10 from the holiday season and swimming doesn't seem to be helping enough. I enjoy it a lot but I gotta burn some kcal's! Maybe I'll swim once a week or so. I can't seem to get my aerobic capacity up enough to get a good enough workout or maybe I've just been drilling too much.

I heard somewhere that it's a nutricional thing. You know, food. BTW, you better keep posting here. You were the catalyst for this forum.

I don't understand Q. Swimming is supposed to be one of the best forms of exercise isn't it? Check out this site where it shows number of calories burned. Swimming for an hour at a moderate rate burns about the same number of calories as running at a moderate pace for an hour.

As my father would say, "Quit swimming like Ester Williams! I want to see some turnover!"

For those of you who don't know who Ester Williams was:

She used to do all those movies in the 40's where they "danced" in the water. Think of a wet Ginger Rogers.

Oh, I'm going to keep posting and I haven't lost interest in improving my swimming. It's just right now my aerobic capacity for swimming is low and I (think) I can burn calories more effectively out of the pool. Yeah, I know that won't get any better without spending time in the pool but I just want to get the weight down a bit first.

Nutrition? WHAAAAAA????? Let's see, last night was a Mexican food dinner (fajitas) with two frozen margaritas... hmmmm. Yeah, yeah, I know but I usually try to hit a happy median. Reduce calories some and pick up exercise level.

I wanted feedback from you folks so thanks for calling my hand on this. If you're not buying my rationalization, just say so. :p Now that I think about it, having a swim day between weight room days does help me recover better to have a better weight room day when I go back. Maybe I'll leave the rotation as it is.

By the way, what did he mean by "turnover"... more laps?

I always had a "pretty" stroke. Technically very good. But he was looking for my arms and legs to work a little harder. Turning the arms over faster.

Yeah, most drilling isn't very costly metabolically. Like ODB said, you might just need to work harder.

Even for the most technically proficient moving through water takes way more energy than activity on dry land.

Q, learn to master one of your most difficult strokes, such as the butterfly, and do not allow anything but that stroke for the session. I know I feel the intensity level pick up on butterfly day. Or, add drag to your body.

If you saw the other Popov video post I just put up recently, you'll see him doing that drill that I like because I seem to swim best immediatly afterward. I think I'll alternate laps with that drill and then sprints because, hopefully, it's imprinting something that seems to work right. I'm still sticking with T/Th swim days... sometimes Sat depending on what else I got to do.

Thanks!

Q - Like yourself, I love swimming but I have made it secondary to my strength and cardio/interval training. My favorite workout is to do strength training, bike intervals, swim laps and then unwind in the whirlpool. This all takes about 2 hours so I don't get to do this as often as I'd like.

I love swimming and wont give it up. I enjoy working on getting better at it.

For fat loss/strength training..lifting and intervals are my primary focus.

But that doesn't mean I have less interest in swimming. I just know what is working for me..

My favorite HIIT workout in the pool is EBEH (Easy, Build, Easy, Hard). I'll do 50m easy, then 50m a bit harder (build), 50m easy, and then 50m all out.

Do 5 sets of that and you'll want to curl up in the fetal position.

I've been doing it awhile...check out my log. I'll have to give Eric's EBEH routine a try. I just do 50m sprint, 50m recovery, but the EBEH sounds more evil!
