Okay, since I'm dominating this area at the moment, anybody count SPL's? I went from about 25 to as low as 11 ONE time. I don't know how I got 11 but, hopefully, I can still count and that's what it was. That was unusual (weird, actually) but I'm regularly at 15-17 now with no loss of pace.
Now, I'm working on my hand entry into the water with minimal turbulence.
your 11...man your swimming counting a million things at ounce.
Strokes, what length your on, number left, # of strokes till your next breath, maybe calculating total swim distance...
I wouldn't be surprised if you counted wrong
Do you do swim golf?

Okay Q I counted my strokes and I hit 24-25 EVERY time. How the H$## did you hit 11 or even 15-17?!! Wow. Wing span of a condor?
I played around with my stroke..yada yada..never made any real difference in stroke count other than upping it. 24 was about my best.
Was interesting. Does this mean I'm not very efficient...or weak..or wut?

I was up in Denton the past few days and I swam at the University of North Texas pool twice. I only counted once and I was at 14. The more relaxed and balanced I feel, the lower my SPL. I do some basic TI drills (maybe modified) first and that always helps. If you try to swim faster by moving everything faster, you just expend more energy and may not really increase your speed. I did originally start at 24-25 before I started trying to do TI.

DPS (Distance Per Stroke) is the key to swimming. If you guys want to improve in this area work on such drills that will help you reduce the number of strokes you take per lengths.
Let me know if you need something to work with. I swam at a National level (3rd at the Canadian Nationals in 2000) and I've coached for 6 years.

I'm listening!!!
Buttefly, 50 and 100 meters, wasn't it?
Now you're into training.
... but you haven't developed your own website much yet.

Ah, how did we live before Google???
THIS IS FREAKY, WHERE DID YOU GET THAT PICTURE HEHE???????????? And how did you know it was the 50 and the 100m Fly???????????????? As I sit here all alone in the dark (momy)
did a quick google of your times - 54.39 for 100 free - that's really fast.
I only swam at district level but anything around 58 put me in the top 3 three at most meets. (this was under 16's)

Thanks, there should be a 52.1 on there somewhere. Coming from Russia I was one of the quickest 12 year old in the country (2:28 for a 200m Im and that's in a 50m pool).
Only during my last year of my swimming career I had a coach that really knew what I needed. I was a sprinter but he trained me as a distance swimmer, that tough me how to finish my races. I also wish I would have hade Mike Robertson or EC as my strength coaches back then Oh well, that's life.
With all the googling going on I decided to google my dad. These are the southern masters records that he currently holds. Some of these are national but I'm not sure which ones. They are all long course (meters). Kind of encourages those of us moving up in years. The first group are ones he still hold in the 60-64 age group. The next ones are 65-69. In some cases, he is getting faster. Notice though that the 50m breaststroke time has held up since 1997.

Total number of pulls, does that make sence? Every time you pull that counts as one stroke.
I think that the most important aspect to great swimming is your ability to feel the changes in water pressure on your hands, body and feet as you're slicing through the water. The better your "feel" for the water is, less effort you'll put into your swim with fewer strokes per length. Working on DPS should be every swimmers priority when training in the water.

Do you like the fist glove approach? How about swimming with a golf ball in each hand?

Swimming with closed fists for this purpose is great. I would work more on sculling rather than closed fists. I have used both drills myself and with my swimmers, both are effective.
I've never actually tried it with golf balls in my hands. Interesting.

starting off with the left arm
left arm pull = 1 stoke
then right up pulls = 2 strokes
that'd be correct, right? if so, i got down to 14 without kicking.
i've been a little drunk and hungover this weekend haha...usually not this mentally out of it with questions concerning swimming haha
but yea, i definately agree with the better you "feel" in the water, the better you swim. i couldn't kick on friday because of my ankle, hurt way too much, but i did pretty decent considering i haven't swam in a long time.

"work more on sculling" Ruslan - How exactly do you work on sculling? I'm trying to lower my SPL and I am stuck. I'm consistantly doing 21 SPL..not very efficient. I keep playing with changing up my stroke but nothing really makes much difference.
If it makes you feel any better I have seen plenty of people swim at my pool that swim upwards 30 per 25.
Yes sometimes I count.

I put this in my logs..but since we have this thread..AND..since I want to be braggadcious ...
I've been concentrating on lowering my strokes per lap (SPL) count. I made some real progress this morning!!
Over the last 3 swims I was paying attention/adjusting my stroke. This got me down to like an inconsistent 21-25 strokes. I tried everything with my hands/arms changing my stroke. It wasn't until this morning that I quit worrying so much about stroke and started paying attention to my body position. I lengthened my body, lowered myself in the water a bit, made an effort to push my chest down just a hair and it was like magic.
I was hitting a consistent 17-18 strokes per length this morning.
