... and since there's no SWIMMING area here at JP's, guess I'll post here.
I'm finally and completely retired from basketball.
Rockclimbing won't work out for a while. Our gym won't be finished for a couple of years and I'm not driving 100 miles r/t to the Austin gym.
Still would like to take Judo from this guy we have here but his classes overlap mine. Looks like my class may not make next semester but, by the time I find out for sure, he's full!
I have no interest in tri's because, for the same reason I'm not hooping, I'm not running! Would like to be able to walk when I'm 90! Plus, I don't even own a bike.
That leaves me with swimming. Since my lumbar region has been giving me hell recently, this has been a good thing! At least I can still swim. A new local group just started (most tri-folks but a few of us interested in Masters) and IT'S FREE!!! That's all I needed to hear! Three coaches are volunteering their time to do this and we can get into the pool for free so that's a sweet deal!
Swimming is great.. as long as you continue weight lifting with it.
By the way.. for the Judo classes.. if there is such a line up.. couldn't you sign on even if you're not sure.. and then cancel if you can't. There might be a waiting list for people who want to go on if someone cancels..

Yep, I do still do the weight lifting but I'm having to modify a lot - maybe for good - until the back heals.
Too late to sign up through normal channels but, if my class doesn't make, I may go see if I can beg my way in.... that is, if my back gets better by then.
I just had a good swim. Air temp - 24 degrees. Water temp - 85 degrees. I think I ran about a 4.1 40 once I got out straight to the hot shower though. I love swimming.

I've got Chi Running in my Favorites but there's more to the story. Suffice it to say, I'm not going to try to tri. :p
I've really been rereading my TI materials and I think there's still a world of improvement I could do just with my swimming. I am interested in open water swims, like tri's would do, and they are just wrapping up a four day class in the Bahamas that I missed. DANG!!!
Oh, and I wore my polyester jammers for the first time yesterday. That WAS nice although the people around me may not have agreed!
One, I received my jammers and have worn them TWICE!!! It already feels pretty normal.
Two, I decided to workout on dry land today and I got on one of those bikes to nowhere for a little HIIT but it faced the pool through a window. I felt myself longing to be in the pool rather than on that stupid cycle!!!
I would really like to but, like I said, I'm just trying to follow the book and the DVD. I drill on this stuff every time I'm in the water and it has seemed to improve my swimming.
Q - you probably know more about this than me, but..... If your are going to do a lot of swimming there are shoulder exercises you need to do. Really easy ones. ALL of my swimming friends have run into this.

What I've found that works so far (... and I probably don't know more than you!) is to try to do the TI method of anchoring yourself with that arm and not focusing on pulling myself with it. I don't have it down yet but rotating the body to turn up to the air puts the shoulder in a more natural position, at least it feels that way. Not even a twinge lately!
Q - actually the problem relates to some upper back muscles that need to be strengthened to counter the ever increasing front and chest muscles. I went out of commission for swimming and sleeping (side sleeper) for several months. Any good trainer can advise. Most of us use bands or pretty light weights for countering.

How about chins/pullups and rowing type stuff? I do a heck of a lot of those and really don't do as much for the chest so maybe it will balance out.
Might do the trick, I am not knowledgeable about this, except that I got the injury. Mostly be ready to notice any shoulder pain, and then see Physical therapist or trainer. I waited until I was really sore.
I haven't been in the pool for maybe six weeks or more - was on vacation for 12 days and am now trying to lose fat - but I got back in on Tuesday and it was GREAT!!! If nothing else, it's such a great way to get everything moving. Plus, it sure feels great to be in the water. Guess I'll add a couple of days a week. I could definitely tell that my skills had dropped off.
