The NFL Draft!!! Oh man I can't wait. I am literally going to sit in front of the TV all weekend! Do you guys have any thoughts about the draft?

Lions trade down twice and try to pick Matt Roth in the first. In the second we will make Kaiser happy and take the Northwestern D tackle Castillo.

Matt Jones will be overrated
Merriman is too similar to mamula
Alex Barron is overrated

Barron is not overrated. One of only 12 FSU players to have his jersey enclosed in glass. Granted he only got 19 reps on the bench test, but his arms are freakishly long.

I sure hope that if DJ is sitting at 10, the Chiefs get the balls to trade up and get him. The Lions have #10, so maybe they'll want to slide to #15.

BTW, DJ is Texas LB Derrick Johnson.

Barron lacks aggressiveness..
he'll be just like the Lion's last bust..Stockar MacDougle. NO balls but great size and talent.

The Lions need a D end..but I'm unsure if Pollock is the right guy. Everyone else seems better suited for the 3-4 so I'm think a trade down and then Roth.

They shouldn't take him. But since they need D, they may want DJ. Sports Weekly has him as the #2 prospect. The Chiefs may have to go above the Lions, but the only ones who want to trade down are the top teams.

The lions probably can't move Teddy Lehman to MLB so he'll play the will and boss bailey the sam.
If DJ is there we will have a good opportunity to trade down..are the chiefs willing to give up what millen asks? that is the question. He'll likely want your #2

I don't think a number two would be the right price. A number two probably won't be offered to the teams that want to trade from the top 3. Problem is that we have a 1, 2, and a 3 on the first day. However that 3 is a compensatory pick that cannot be traded.

They have agreed to a deal with Surtain on a multi year deal if the trade with the Dolphins can be made. However, what pick to send to the Dolphins is the key. We have offered a 4, they want a 2, therefore the 3 would be the logical compromise. However, since the three can't go, it may be a conditional pick based on Surtain's performance. I'd assume we could give the Lions a 4 this year and a 3 next year, but I doubt that King Carl is going to part with a 2, even if DJ is a future HOF.

Millen screwed the Browns out of #2 just to flop picks last year.
I'd settle for a three just because of the salary implications..however without one, perhaps a #4 and #3 next year.

The Browns are stupid. It will be interesting to see if Crennel brings some respect to them, and if their personnel decisions get any better.

Speaking of the Browns, I would like to know what kind of Kool Aid Mike Shanahan was drinking when he got three of their D Line castoffs.

to give up who, Ruben Droughns? The Lions third round pick who was cut in favor of Greg Hill?
I would take a chance on Courtney Brown as well!
How is Johnny Morton working out for you guys?

Greg Hill!!! I have his autograph somewhere at home. he was the next big thing. We drafted him to replace Marcus, but Marcus held him off big time.

Johnnie Morton. Hasn't broken 800 yards or 4 TDs in 3 years. And he'll be 34 soon. I sure hope Samie Parker becomes decent or we draft a receiver.

I like Bell over Droughns, but to rebuild your D Line with 3 guys from the last ranked rush defense? That's uhhh, different. And Shanahan also signed Ron Dayne. He doesn't have the quickness to get yards after that first cut. A lot of backs succeed in that system; but Dayne doesn't fit the mold.

EDIT: Did you see that it actually was A. Smith the QB who visited the Lions, and not the Stanford TE like they said? Looks like Harrington is out the door; or at least opening it.

yeah, I saw that and found it quite curious.
Harrington hasn't played well, but in fairness the receivers have been horrid. Hakim has NO hands, he'll be cut June 1, and Stephen Alexander and Tai Streets were abysmal. The Lions owe Harrington the opportunity to play with a second year Roy, Rogers, and Pollard.
I've seen a quite a few games where Joey checks down too often but they show on replay, the receivers don't even get an inch of separation..so what is he supposed to do?

E-
I didn't know you were a Lions fan! Somehting we can agree on...Anyway, I am excited about Kennedy but I still think we could get a better FS. And you're right on point about the O. Alexander sucked it up last year, Hakim has always sucked, and Roy played the second half of the season on a bum ankle. I sure hope that Rogers can play more than 2 weeks this year before snapping his collar bone. The good thing though is that if he doesn't play in at least 12 or 14 games this season (not sure of the exact #) we get a % of his bonus back. Back to the D I don't think that Teddy is ready to play middle either, and Boss is coming off of that injury so DJ might be some good insurance, but we do need a DE bad! If worst comes to worst though, is Kevin Carter still a FA?

Nick -
I think DJ will go at #3. To my understanding I think that the Browns know that this is a rebuilding year, and are willing to ride this Holcomb thing out for a year. I mean there are no true star QBs, so why not wait till next season and try to get Lienhart or the kid from LSU (can't think of his name).

By the way what do you guys think about the following players:

- Adrian McPherson
- Maurece Clarett
- Timmy Chang
- Mike Williams

Well I was in search of a favorite team, and I wanted a team with some history. It also helped that they drafted Roy Williams. (I was pretty flip floppy for the last few years and then when they drafted Roy [my fav college player] that ws it..)

E- Do you goto the Lions forums at all?

No Holcomb. He signed with the Bills to back up Losman. They signed Dilfer, who can hold down the spot for a year; then give way to Smith or Rodgers. Hell, we don't know if Suggs is the answer, they may take a back

LSU? They don't have any star QBs. The only guy they have is a freshman, so he won't be in the NFL for 3 years.

McPherson is intriguing. If Green were a couple of years older, I would love for the Chiefs to take him with their 2nd rounder. Clarett can go to hell. He won't make it in the pros. I want to know how he got heavier, quicker and stronger between the combine and his workout. (The S Word?) Chang- Product of the system. Williams- Top 10 pick. If the Bears don't take him, (I hear they're set on Benson if he's still there) The Vikes will.

Another Lions fan, here- I think they should take the best available player. They've got young talent across the board, and if everyone continues to imrpove, they don't have too many glaring holes in their roster, as in years past. I think that James Hall and Kalimba Edwards could be a nice comb at Defensive End. If Edwards plays to his potential, they'd have a pretty strong pass rush.

I grew up in Detroit, and moved to Indy 3 years ago. I, too, am a huge fan of Detroit sports.

Problem is Kalimba right now is playing behind Hall I believe. I think Redding/Devries on the left and Hall/Edwards on the right.

That said, Redding doesn't have the speed to get to the QB..he's a run stuffing end and could be moved inside and play a one gap Luther Ellis type rush role. Even drafting a situational pass rusher like Tuck from ND in the second round would make our line more formidable.

The tenth pick just has no value. Although Ninja disagreed with me, I just read the Texans have dropped Barron from their lists (smokescreen?) because he can't handle the bull rush. There is no value unless DJ slips or Rolle slips..which are both highly unlikely. If we can't trade down (since most teams are looking to trade down and not up) I think we look at BPA which on most boards seems to be Merriman. I wouldn't love this pick but if he really turns into 'freak 2' I sure wouldn't mind.

Doing some cursory reading of the sporting news and espn's draft sights..as well as about.com's draft forums..oh, and Lionbacker.com...i think the lions ought to target..

Merriman unless they can trade down
#2 Castillo
#3 free safety propect - Va tech or Stanford both have players that might be available here
#4 slot receiver to replace Hakim
#5 - traded to KC last year
#6 - the TE from Lehigh..sounds like he is tough
#7 - developmental QB (we only have 2 QBs signed)

unfortunately that leaves us without a tackle or guard to develop, not an ideal situation...which is why trading down and getting an extra pick sure would be nice..
I'd love to have a d though that had a line of
Merriman - Big Daddy - Rogers - Hall
backers
Lehman - holems - Bailey
that is a strong front 7 with great depth at the ends so the guys are fresh! passing downs move redding inside and replace holmes in the middle wiht Lehman, and Alex Lewis to the weakside..and that is a fearsome 7!

From what I understand we're going to use our 3rd round for a QB. And the 2nd round on a FS.

E- you're right, Redding started on the other side last year. Optimally, I'd like them to nab Antrell Rolle. I don't really see that happening, though.

Ruck,

What would you like them to do with Rolle? Move him to FS?

I mean we have Bly, Bryant, and Cash just resigned. Although both Bly and Bryant were injured most of last season they really sucked it up when they weren't.

I think Dre Bly is the man. I also like Cash as a nickleback. However, I don't have much confidence in Fernando Bryant. He's always been a solid CB, but I just don't feel that good about him. Maybe it's his size. He's only got 5 INT's in 6 years.

Rolle is taller and from what I've seen of him, he is a serious playmaker. I can just picture Bly, Rolle, and Kenoy Kennedy disrupting things.

It's probably a moot point. Nobody expects Rolle to last to the Lions spot. I just have too many bad memories of 2001, 2002 when Cash was their best DB, as rookie taken in the 6th round. I hated that.

I'm happy with the draft. I think Cody will do a good job on the end, and Williams will be able to step up if Rogers goes down again. You also forgot that we now have Kevin Johnson and Kevin Jones. This is truly a make or break year for Joey.

I would say bye to Az as well.

Man, They are setting Joey up to be the hero or the scapegoat. I like him, so I hope he succeeds. These receivers are potentially as explosive as the Colts. I think this is going to be a pretty fun year for the Lions.

Yes, hopefully our defense holds up and our guys can stay healthy. I really like Joey too, and hope that he can have an amazing year and say FU to all his haters (ppl that booed him when he got injured, etc.)
