Question

Okay. I sit here, depressed about yet another Steelers loss in the AFC Championship game (yes, I know it's Tuesday already, and yes, I know it's only football, and yes, just STFU already ). I am reminded of a poll that was posted on a website in the Pittsburgh area the last time the Steelers lost. I thought I would throw the question out to you all, to see what you thought. (I would've created an actual poll, but they're disabled in the Sports Discussion Forum).

Anyway, if you had your choice, which would you choose:

1. Your favorite team plays consistently well each year, but is eliminated short of the Super Bowl every year.
2. Your favorite team typically plays awful football for 11 out of every 12 years. But that one year, they have a good season, and end up victorious in the Super Bowl.

For me, I don't know. Right now I'd vote for number 2, but that's just because I'm still bitter. Once my head clears, I don't know which I would choose (I'll let you know when I get there).

So, what do you think? A successful regular season team that stinks it up in the playoffs, or a team that can find the magic once every dozen years, but can' find their way out of a paper bag for the other 11?

That's a tough one. I am a diehard Lions fan that has neither had a consistent winner nor a lone Super Bowl Championship. I think that I would be very happy with either scenario.

Right now, I would be happy with 8-8!!

I guess I should consider myself lucky that I'm not a Lions fan. The Lions must have one of the worst front offices in the league. It's pretty sad when Barry Sanders, arguably the best running back the NFL has ever seen, decides he's had enough and quits, rather than continue killing himself for a team with noone around him.

Sorry, I don't mean to ridicule the team you guys root for. It just seems like there are a few teams in the NFL - Detroit, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and even San Diego prior to this year - that just can't put it together at all.

You guys are making me want to choose # 1 again.

It depends, do we get a championship, say, once every 25 years with option #1?

Wow, I'm a Lions fan too. We need to star a support group for eachother here, because the Lions MB is filled with 12 yr old trolls.

Anyway like jruck and wingsfan I'd take either right about now. Hopefully our time will come and we'll draft someone on the defensive side of the ball this year and actually do something.

PS. I hope Rogers plays this season, if not we get a lot of our $$ back.

I think the Lions are on the right track. They've had some pretty solid players come in through the draft the last few years, and I think that they can turn the corner if Joey starts to play more consistently.

Just as important as Rogers' return is Boss Bailey. That guy would have been a difference maker this year, and will help make the linebackers a fairly deep group next year. I think they need help at safety and maybe one more stud on the o-line.

As horribly disappointed as I am, I guess I'd rather have the Steelers there in the AFC Championship every year, even if we hardly ever advance. I'm also a Pirates fan, and seeing as how I've lost compelte interest in that team, which cannot even afford (due to lack of interest in the team) to pay its mediocre players to stay... I guess I'd rather have something to look forward too.

Here's something I read this morning. I included it on a posting in the Off Topic section, but it belongs in the sports dicussion:

In the last two weeks New England held the best offense in football (Indianapolis) to 3 points then scored 41 points on the league's best defense (Pittsburgh).

Any thoughts? I'd say the Eagles have a better defensive backfield than Pittsburgh, and arguable are as good or better than the Steelers overall. McNabb, of course didn't have the year Manning had for Indy, but he's having a good year if not his best. Manning was probably thrown off by the weather a bet v. New England. That won't be a problem in Jacksonville. I think the game will be closer that the above statement might indicate. However, I've already given the 7 pts. and put a little money on New England. That is the kiss of death for the Pats.
