Hey Z,
I don't mean to stir anything up, but the Mets spent WWAAAAYY too much $$ for Beltran - there's no way he's worth $119 million over 7 years. The Mets can thank Scott Boras for inflating the market for that guy. If you look at his statistics, he probably worth about half of what he got (as much as anyone can possibly be worth $60 million!!

).
Just my two cents. I'm a diehard Pirates fan, and have been living the frustration of a losing season for 12 years now. There's nothing I would like better than to see the Pirates go to the dance. But, even though the Pirates are doing very well with what they've got, the chances of the Pirates ever going to the World Series are very, very, very slim. Their payroll this coming year will be ~$40 million. They Yankees payroll is over $200 million!
I will never understand the economics of baseball. It seems to me that they're just digging themselves a hole that they will never be able to get out of. The Collective Bargaining agreement is a joke, and the Yankees gladly pay the "penalty" for their high payroll. But until there's actual revenue sharing and a salary cap, the small market teams don't stand much of a chance.
