Somebody explain to me what happened during the Texas v. Texas A&M game this weekend. I just caught part of the hoo-ha but I believe A&M was leading 13-12, the Longhorns had just scored and lined up for the extra point to tie the game. The snap was botched and the kicker just booted the ball into the line. It rolled into the end zone and a Texas A&M player fell on it. Texas was awarded 1 point and the game was tied at 13. How is it that Texas was awarded a point for missing an extra point?

This link has a brief explanation. It's a 1 point safety because it was recovered in the end zone. Strange rule. College FB has a few strange rules associated with the extra point. The defending team can block the attempt (or intercept a pass/return a fumble on a 2 point conversion) and run it back for 2 points.

Thanks. I've been watching football for a long time and this is the first I've heard of a 1 pt. safety. Below is the explanation contained in the link provided by Russ. Looks like it was new one for the Texas coach as well. It sure seems weird that a team would be awarded a point for completely screwing up the extra point and the other team penalized for recovering the ball.

"But because the Longhorns' regular holder, wide receiver Tony Jeffery, left the game earlier with a rib injury, backup QB Matt Nordgren was sent in and he dropped the snap, causing Dusty Mangum to drive the kick along the ground.

The ensuing scrum ended with the Aggies' Jaxson Appel on top of the ball in the end zone, giving Texas a rare 1-point safety that tied the game at 13.

"I'm a little embarrassed," Brown said. "I didn't know that was a rule."

Said A&M coach Dennis Franchione, "I don't know that I've ever seen a one-point safety. That was a unique call."

Reminds me a bit of the famous 'Leon Let It Be' play made by the Cowboys' Leon Lett in a Thanksgiving Day game against Miami in '93. The Dolphins attempted a game winning field goal with about a few left. It was blocked, and all Dallas had to do was let the ball come to a stop and the game was over. But Lett tried to fall on it in his end zone, fumbled it, and it was recovered by Miami. They weren't credited wit a touchdown, but the game could not end on that play, so Miami was awarded the ball at the Dallas 1 yard line for a final play. They attempted and made a field goal to win the game.

I remember that one. Also in '93 Lett picked up a fumble, or intercepted a pass, I forget which and was headed for the end zone. He started celebrating too early and a Buffalo Bill ran up behind him and knocked the ball out of his hand. Dallas didn't score and the Bills won the game.

I was reminded of that play today when the Kansas City Chief kickoff returner just dropped the ball on about the 5 yard line after running the second half kickoff back for an apparent touchdown.

That was Don Beebe of the Bills in Super Bowl XXVII. Buffalo lost the game by a wide margin, though: http://www.nfl.com/features/thanksgiving/lett

no idea what happened, but go Longhorns!

Didn't Andre Reed do something similar to Lett and he was running up the sideline and stretched his arms out in celebration and someone came up behind him and smaked the ball out of his hands?

Also I think 2 weeks ago Gaffney from the Texans ran a reverse and right when he was about to cross the goalline dropped the ball and began to celebrate thinking he got the TD, but it was a touchback..

Son is still at A&M, daughter will return to UT when she gets back. Wife and I are both A&M grads but we live about 30 minutes from Austin... it gets confusing.

Doesn't matter. You're likely to hyave to deal with watching the rival Sooners play for the National Title

Oh, that's my brother-in-law and niece's husband. OU this and OU that... blah, blah, blah!

I've moved on to the NBA anyway... just waiting for the next brawl! Hey, maybe I should switch to hockey where that's actually part of the game!

The play was unique in that it was an attempted kick (1 point play) that could have been advanced by A&M and if they (A&M) were able to return it for a TD, it would have counted as 2 points. The problem is that when A&M attempted to return the ball they fumbled (outside the end zone), recovering it themselves back IN the end zone...this is why it was a safety. The reason it was a one point safety was because it was in essence based on a 2 point play attempt.

Wow, just read my explanation and realize that most people will now be even more confused!

Nope. It makes perfect sense. Although I am well versed in the rules of football.

Good thing it wasn't the last play of the game and didn't have a bearing on the final outcome. An NBA game could have errupted (no hockey to pick on).
