I just want to start a thread on the 100 year old franchise. The one that all hockey gets measured against.
FIrst off...What took Gainey so long to revamp a long ailing team that has been in need of some major work. Did he get it right? I dunno, but on paper they look better, defence looks stronger, I would have liked Beauchemin in the mix. I still think they need more muscle up front, an energy line that can knock some bodies around.
Oh by the way I hate the Maple Leafs even more now that Burke is the GM.

I was at the Canadiens-Leafs game last night. Entertaining game, but Leafs were the better team by a wide margin until the final 7-8 minutes of the 3rd period. Price stole the game.
I got to visit the Canadiens room after the game (our tickets were from the Canadiens strength coach--friend of a friend) and heard the bad news about Markov at that time. No surprise that he's out for a few months. Huge blow to the Canadiens.
Leafs look like a low seed playoff team. I'm not convinced that Montreal is a playoff team.
2 of the goals were on the power play. Gionta's PP goalcame right off a face off, but could probably be called missed coverage. Moen's goal was week on Toskala's part, and Gorges' goal was a big rebound and missed coverage.
Voice is a bit hoarse today---last night may have been the pinnacle of the Canadiens season
2-0..."perfect" so far....two games stolen by Carey Price....It would seem the Habs like the street hockey style and wait till some one yells "Next goal wins!"
I guesssthis early in the season the extra ice time will just help them get into game shape sooner.

One of the problems I've observed is that they're having some difficulty getting the puck out of their own zone. Losing Markov won't help in that respect. They're a bit small up front and lose quite a few battles along the boards. To me, though, their biggest problem will be lack of secondary scoring.
Being small up front is a problem when your D-men don't move the puck well. Unfortunately upfront they are built for a speed transition game and are missing guys to get the puck into the neutral zone with speed.
If this doesn't change Price will see alot more rubber than D.C. hooker.

I hope Vancouver starts "lose"ongo tonite. Sorry but I'm not a fan of his. He comes off as an egotistical bastard...dude have some humility and admit you sucked...badly!

They're kind of rebuilding at this point. I don't see how a team can win with Kostitsyn and Plekanec on the 2nd line. And the D left Price alone on most of the goals.
I think Gainey should probably stay. His results in Montreal have been less than spectacular, but one could argue that there has been serious underperformance from some major talents, e.g., Kostitsyn.
This year should be interesting, now that they have a couple guys, (Gionta & Gomez) with real work ethic, to see if and when it rubs off on the under performers.
Oh and Nash's goal last night in Calgary should put him on the top line in Vancouver.

The first regulation time win and they dominated the play....even if it was only the Islanders. But if they don't beat the teams they should...they be no better than the Leafs

Another O/T win...back over .500...and goals from guys other than the top line and the D jumped up they looked rather good....the saucer pass from Plekanec to Hamerlik was sweet.

Still not a convincing team to me. Halak's playing OK, so I guess there's a goaltending controversy now too. Some commentators don't think Price will ever have starter stuff for the NHL, which is a bit surprising given how well he performed in big games in junior and inthe AHL.
