Fantastic. I'm eagerly awaiting the release of tickets for the 2010 US Open. To be a spectator is one thing to actually play is another.
Enjoy

I hope to have 1 or 2 good holes. I am under no illusions regarding the quality of my game at this time, but it would be nice to pound out a couple of good drives and hit a few decent irons
I took an awful lot of swings, but it is an absolutely spectacular golf course. The beauty of the course is unparalleled, and it is full of subtleties dificult to appreciate on TV.

What's an awful lot?

Most holes. The lies are often uneven (I crushed my drives on #9 and #16, and both left me with sidehill/downhill fairway lies that I simply lack the skills to overcome, given the precision required for the approach shots), the approaches to greens need to be precise, and you need to choose your target carefully on the green, or you're in 3 putt territory. There are a lot of blind shots and a lot of visually intimidating shots. #17 with a back left pin placement is something you need to see to appreciate. You're hitting from 190 to 200 yards to a green 15 yards deep where you need to carry a bunker. Go left or long, and you're ball is in the Pacific. Go right and you have an impossible 2 putt if you happen to catch the right side of the green.
Not much wind, so I played a 3/4 swing lob wedge (pulled into the left trap). With the wind blowing in during the '92 US Open Tom Kite played a 6 iron to this green, I believe, on the way to his victory.

Playing the Links at Spansih Bay the next morning:
That's a great view on #7. #'s 8 and 9 must be equally spectacular.
8 is unreal. I hit a reasonable shot off the tee (used my #3 hybrid), but it tailed right and went into the gorge. I crushed my drive on #9, but had a sidehill/downhill lie, and didn't hit the green with my approach. Made a decent chip and just missed my par putt.
Spanish Bay was really foggy that morning...eeerie and cool. The next few days we had lots of sunshine
A links course in the fog....niiiicccceeee!!!!

The approach shot on 8 would scare the bejezzus out of me.
