Favre tells Packers he's retiring
Tuesday, March 4, 2008
ESPN.com news services

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that according to Favre's agent, Buss Cook, Favre informed Packers coach Mike McCarthy of his decision Monday night.

A sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, Favre, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, led the Packers back to the NFL's elite. He retires with 5,377 carrer completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions.

As a player Favre was known for his durability, his willingness to take risks and turn broken plays into big gains and the way his love for the game was evident in the way he played. He went to a pair of Super Bowls in 1996 and 1997, winning it all on his first try, as well as nine Pro Bowls.

Cook said as of Tuesday morning, there were no plans for Favre to hold a news conference.

Favre, who returned for the 2007 season when many thought he should have left the game, had a career renaissance in his final season and led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in overtime.

Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers. Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

ESPN NFL reporter Chris Mortensen contributed to this story.

One of the best to play at that position. He will be missed but it was great fun watching him play.

See ya later Brett. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Signed,
Bears Fans

(j/k - we actually loved him the last few year because we owned him in that time).

STATS:
During Favres record consecutive starts, the Bears had 21 different starting QBs (an NFL record). And yet, during that time, we also have as many Super Bowl appearances as the Pack.

The Lions were 0-16 at Lambeau against Favre.

Good riddance!

You sure about that?

The Packers played in back-to-back Super Bowls- beating New England in the 1st and losing the 2nd to the Broncos.

the Bears only appearance over that time was last year.

A very talented guy. I'm glad he did after the season he had this past year and not at the end of a totally crappy season.

Ahh, hell you're right. Just like every Bears fan, 1985 doesn't seem like it was 18 years ago. SBFM (selective Bears' fan memory).

Given that we just let Muhs go and signed Rex for another year, it looks like we're delaying our return for yet another few years.

According to reports cheeseheads are being worn at halfmast and Leinenkeugels will be coming out with a Favre ale with just a hint of tobacco juice.

I just wish with all my heart that the media would give his retirement more coverage. I mean, sheesh...... C'mon!

Some one on ESPN was saying there is a chance that Bret may come out of retirement. This is all some sort of finger to the organization for not getting Moss..

A cheesehead joke, now thats funny.

I hate those friggin things. Every time we play in anything College or Pro, Basketball or Football some of our local yocals have to show up with those things and of course the media just loves to show them. Ughh.

Farve was great to watch and impossible to replace.

He was a really awesome QB. Sometimes too much of something can really get to you and then feel like moving on to something else for a while or for the rest of their lives or just play for fun. Very understandable. I have seen athletes retire and then come back after taking off a year because they are very tired and want to take a break and spend time with their family. I wish the best of luck to Favre. =)
