Eh, kinda sad that they need props now instead of sheer physical ability a la Wilkins and Jordan, and who could forget Spud Webb?

True enough about the props and I wasn't really impressed with the birthday cake thing all that much but I loved the "bounce it off the back of the backboard first" dunk. I do think Spud was my all time favorite. It's one thing for a 7 footer to dunk but Spud showed a whole different kind of athleticism! I'm 6'3" and have always been "gravitationally challenged" so I may not appreciate them the same.

I think it's because of guys like Wilkins and Jordan and Webb that they need props. These guys set in motion pushing the limits of physical ability in the dunk contest. Aside from leaping from the foul line or hanging your elbow in the rim, there's not much new raw physical ability stuff left. They got to get creative, like Howard did with the behind the backboard dunk. Props are the next wave in this contest.

Also, something to note: Howard wanted to use a 12 foot rim for some dunks, but the NBA said no.

Heres the real question, 2000 Vince vs 2008 Dwight....who wins? I think the elbow greese is one of the best dunks ever but Dwight's first and last dunks.....they were just "video game". If they had the final round like this year, who do you think the fans would of crowned? I personally would of voted for dwight.

Vince Carter was amazing. I was only in 7th grade and I remember everything about that contest clearly. I remember Allen Iverson getting up and running away after one of the dunks. It just blew everyone away. Dwight Howard was very creative and there are definetly a lot of people who can do those dunks, but at the time Vince Carter was out of his mind.

i dunno bout that, "a lot of people who can do those dunks". Ive seen guys in my college who play ball and can do the elbow grease. I dont think too many people alive can do Howard's first and second dunks. Hell, like I said Green did Vince's one dunk barefoot and that guy belongs in the D-League. Vince's best dunk in his career was not even during the contest. We all remember him Tea bagging the 7 footer at the olympics. That being said, I have NEVER seen anyone through it down like Dwight. I live 25 min from the magic's arena and I watch my boys play them every year. If you have never seen #12 in person throwing it down, you might not be able to comprehend just how nasty and hard he throws it down. Ive personally seen him just completely Posterize Zo 4 times in one game. Crazy part is, hes just a boy. If shaq can play till hes 36, this kid has over 13 years left in his career.

I definetly agree with him throwing down tough. But from a viewers standpoint, I can distinctly remember watching the reactions of KG, Shaq, and Allen Iverson when Vince did his thing. When I said "a lot of people can do those dunks" I was referring to the ones Vince did, not Dwights (my mistake haha). Vince stunned some of the best players to every play the game with his attitude and adrenaline, with dunks that nowadays a good number of NBA players can do. But at the time there was nothing better.

On a different note, I am in an argument with my roommate on whether Dwight meant to throw the ball through the hoop on his superman dunk. I thought it was intentional, he feels that he actually meant to dunk it (as in grab the rim). Any thoughts?

Dwight was awesome, but only MJ and Dominique were ever in Vince's realm.

He ment to throw it Eric, I saw his practice video. He did it like 3 times the same way.

I love Vince, but he is a bum. He has to be the biggest disappointment in the NBA for my time. So much talent and potential, and he did/does nothing with it. If Kidd ever gets traded out of NJ dont be surprised if we see Toronto Vince on the court slugging it up until he gets traded.

The cupcake dunk was just dumb. Big whoop. Not that I could do it, but what NBA player couldn't

The Superman dunk was cool, but it wasn't a dunk. He may have meant to throw it in, but it would've been better had he actually dunked the ball since it was a "slam dunk" contest. Still..... very impressive.

Nobody touches Vince, Michael and 'Nique = sheer talent and ability

I just wasn't impressed with the Superman Dunk, if that is what you want to call it. I believe that you have to at least touch the rim for it to be a dunk. Just my opinion, but that is how I feel.
