Ok, so Cashman and Co. have made their second good move of 2006: they traded Gary Sheffield for 3 pitching prospects! The first good move, of course, was bringing over Bobby Abreu.
As a Yankees fan (I know, I know) it's good to see some intelligence in the Yankees choices after 5 years of insanity.
FYI:
"New York gets right-handers Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett.
The 23-year-old Sanchez was a combined 10-6 with a 2.53 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 123 innings with Triple-A Toledo and Double-A Erie this year. He is a hard thrower and was mentioned in trade speculation last summer before hurting an elbow.
Whelan, 22, was 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA and 27 saves for Class A Lakeland. Claggett, 22, was 7-2 with an 0.91 ERA and 14 saves for Class A West Michigan. "
(from Yahoo Sports)
Even if just one of those guys pans out to be a respectable middle-reliever, the Yanks have done well. Sheff was dying to get out, the Yanks had nowhere to put him... I'm happy.
Wow. That's pretty big news. I've heard some good stuff about Claggett (he played just a few miles down the road from me and I saw him pitch a couple times). Locals were going nuts, worried that Detroit was going to have give up Verlander or Zumaya to get a bat in town.
I think it's great the Yankees are finally starting reload on the pitching. Sheffield was a good player for them, but is really the odd man out with Abreu

Howie/Jamie what do you guys think?
My first reaction was chemistry. One of the things I loved about the 2006 Tigers was the team effort and lack of ego. So, here comes Sheff and his baggage. However, he apparently loves Dombrowski and Leyland from his championship days with the Marlins, so maybe he fits in the locker room. (I felt the same way when the Pistons picked up Rasheed Wallace. That seems to have worked out.)
I trust Leyland and Dombrowski. He'll hit. I hope he's not a problem. As far as the pitching goes, the Tigers have pitching to spare.

Howie, I think you're right on. Sheff is a big spoiled kid. But if he's where he wants to be, and Leyland obviously knows how to make him feel welcome... he'll behave. Should be interesting to see how he does if they meet the Yanks in the playoffs again!
I agreee. The Tigers were fortunate enough to be in a situation where they could afford to trade some stud pitching prospects. This trade might actually work out well for both sides. From what I hear, Sanchez is going to be a stud, but he was going to be fighting with Mike Maroth, Andrew Miller and Will Ledezma for the 5th spot in the rotation at best this year. This trade might make them the favorite to win it all. Wow.

They're not the favorite yet. I think they still need a big left handed bat at first base. Once they get that, then they will be very tough.

Good point, Mike. I forgot that you hate Casey. LOL
Hate's a strong word. How can you hate the guy after his World Series performance. I was happy for him. Hopefully he'll get a good contract someplace other than Detroit. But the Tigers need a big left handed bat. Casey's not the guy and neither is Shelton. Hell, I probably won't be satisfied until the resurrect Norm Cash.

At the beginning of the off-season, I was thinking they might try to trade for Tejada and move Guillen to 1st. With Sheff coming aboard, that's not going to happen. At this point, I just don't know who they could bring in this off-season that could be better than Casey (without giving up more young pitching).

I'd give up some young pitching for Ryan Howard.

I like Walker, too. I think letting him go means we'll see more of Ledezma, though... and maybe Andrew Miller will make the MLB roster as another bullpen lefty. I'm fine with that.
