Default MLB Trade Deadline

The deadline is this afternoon at 4:00 PM.

The Tigers just picked up Sean Casey. I think that will be a nice unsung pickup. They needed another lefthanded bat. With Dmitri Young's return, this gives them 2.

Where is Soriano headed??? Any other big names besides Abreu moving?

The Yankees picked Abreu yesterday.

I think Soriano will stay put.

The Astros are sending Brad Lidge to the Royals. They want to give him a break from the pressure of pennant races and holding onto leads.

As if we have any chance at the pennant!

The Twins sent Lohse to the Reds for a prospect. I'm glad to see him gone.

I'll take him. Burgy and Lidge at the back end is just fine with me.

After the Julio Lugo trade, the Devil Rays are calling up shortstop Ben Zobrist to fill the void. Zobrist was acquired from Houston in the Aubrey Huff deal and has been playing for the AAA Durham Bulls ever since. He also played at my college (Olivet Nazarene University) while I was there, before transferring to Dallas Baptist his senior year- for a chance to get drafted. He was in my conditioning and fitness class and was the only person that could beat me in the 15 minute run.

RL- Are you familiar with Zobrist? What's the word on him in Houston?

My brother lives in Ft Myers, so he's going to drive up and check out his debut tonight. It's too bad he has to debut against my boy, Verlander.

The Astros' minor league team in Corpus Christi is coached by Jack Clark, and he had this to say:

"Losing Zobrist was like losing two players."

He's a switch-hitting shortstop with a career .323 average in the minors (OBP over .400 every year), and he's 25 years old. Not much power, but a great eye at the plate and smart base-runner. Solid defensively but not excellent.

Bottom line: Most clubs would have brought him up a while ago. The Astros are notorious for taking a lot of time with prospects.

Shit. Maddux is gone. I don't know why I am SO bummed, but I am. It was just right to have him end his career here in Chicago.

Cause the Cubs suck and Maddux is getting old. His presence in the clubhouse is more important than his starts.

It's official: the World Series of Dumbest Teams is ON! The Nationals will represent the National League, and the Orioles will represent the American. Fortunately, both teams will have their biggest hitters (Tejada and Soriano) and the very, very stupid management teams.

O's start at 5-2 favorites for the series, given past history of success in this Series.

Agreed on all counts. The offers Baltimore turned down for Tejada were absolutely ridiculous.

What about the BoSox not pulling the trigger? I mean, the word is now that Javy Lopez will go there, but he had what, one good year with the Braves.

And Fish and Nick, you're right, I can't believe Tejada and Soriano stayed. So, so dumb.

I sure thought that Boston would get anxious after the Abreu deal. Needed to add some pitching. I was thinking they would try to swing a Soriano/Hernandez for Crisp/Hansen/Lester deal.

Apparently the Royals and Yanks had a deal in principle to send Redman/DeJesus/Teahen/Sanders to New York for A-Rod/Bean (minor leaguer)/cash, but Cashman backed out because of the amount of money trading hands.

Andruw Jones was claimed off of waivers today by an unnamed team. The Braves have until tomorrow at 1:00 PM to trade him.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2539544

This sucks. Jones is one of my favorite players, and plays for my 2nd favorite team. Tomorrow, I'm going to Cincy to see the Reds and Braves play. Andruw Jones was the most exciting reason to go to the game. Now, he probably won't even be on the team when the game starts.
