Hey guys,
Well I am running in Detroit's annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. I'm a little nervous because I have never run that far before and the weather forcast is 20/34 with snow flurries. I have been reading the cold weather thread and I think I'm good it terms of clothing.
Any suggestions for a good race?

Have your Thanksgiving meal after the race!
After the first mile you won't even know it's cold!

Don't let your adrenaline rush cause you to go out too fast in the beginning, because it is VERY easy to do. Don't push to keep up with other runners in the first mile or two. Believe me, there will be many who go out too fast and crash very early.
Enjoy the race!!!

ODB, you mean I shouldn't have a prerace turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and protein powder shake?
bamadave, that is my plan. Slow and steady wins the race.. Right?
I will post up after the race to give you guys an update.

Good luck, from a fellow Turkey Trotter! (but not in Detroit!)

All the best, dude. Don't forget to map out or even walk the course first, and pay attention to the mile markers. Both will make the run that much easier.

Hey guys, didn't touch the PC all weekend or I would have responded earlier..
Temps were a balmy 22° when we started and it was snowing so hard you could not see Canada across the Detroit river. It cleared up after about the first half mile and it was sunny for the rest of the race.
I finished in 1:10. Not a world record, in fact the men's winner ran it in 32:09, but I don't care. I had a blast!!!! I am telling everyone I know about the race because I'm so geeked that it went so well. I felt great, kept my pace, and never had to stop or walk.
I ran with a friend of mine, and even though she doesn't read the board I have to say that I could not have done this without her support.
Finally, thanks for the support and advice guys, I don't think this will be my last 10k.
Chris

Great job! I'm curious about your heat management. What clothing and how did it work for you?

I think my heat management was pretty poor, I was way over dressed. This is what I had on.
Top:
DriFit under shirt
Cotton long sleeve shirt
nylon wind vest
Fleece vest
Long sleeve Outer Layer Fleece Jacket
Bottom:
Compression shorts
DriFit running tights
Nylon wind breaker running pants with a liner
Two pair of cotton sweat socks
Standard running shoes
I also had a hat and a neck gator on my neck/face. The only part of my body that was exposed was my eyes.
I think I would have been better off with just the DriFit shirt, Cotton shirt, outer Fleece jacket on the top, the running tights on the bottom, and the hat and neck gator. When I was done I could wring the sweat out of the cotton T Shirt.
Like I said, I way over dressed!!!

I never wear cotton when it's cold. That kind of temperature would mean a longsleeve nylon shirt, nylon running jacket with full zip front to cool off, tights, gloves and something over my ears. My extremeties tend to get cold but the core heats up quick.
