There hasn't been much action in this forum lately though I am sure I am not the only one hoping for a new post. So here it is.
As a recent post stated in such a succint and concise manner, HIIT is hard. I have been trying it out for a little over a month. I have been working on getting more cycles into the workout but am wiped after 5 or so. Lately I have lengthened the rest period thinking the ratio was to high (intense vs rest). I guess it has helped a little but I have a ways to go. Part of the problem may be that I run first thing in the morning on an empty stomache. I have never felt good running any other time of the day. So I keep trying.
As a side note, does anyone else feel like an idiot running all out arms and legs flailing as people drive by rubber necking with that look on thier face of "What the he** is wrong with that dat fella?" Maybe it's just me being self concious but I sure do get a number of those looks.
Hey look. Long post with no questions. Maybe if I can't get to the level I want fitness wise, at least I can work on getting a high post count!

newride- I hear ya on getting looks for sprinting down the side of the road. It's kind of funny.
As far as eating goes, why don't you try eating a banana or granola bar or something when you get up. That should give you a little bit of boost, but you wouldn't feel full, by any means.

I wouldn't worry about what people think when you are running fast on the street. Heck, I got plenty of weird looks last week running 800 meter intervals at a TRACK of all places. It's like you are a freak of nature if you aren't walking or lumbering along at a tortoise pace.
And whatever the case, if Buk can run through his neighborhood carrying sandbags, you can certainly sprint! [img]smile.gif[/img]

may I ask, what is HIIT?
I have some form feedback and tips, that may help, if you want it.
I run slow, but I do it pretty!

I get funny looks and comments sprinting outside too. Even had people pull over and ask me how fast I was going. [img]tongue.gif[/img]
The WORST part is when they catch me when I'm walking and they're running and say "keep it up, or get moving" or something to that effect assuming I had been walking the whole time and can't understand why I'm so sweaty.

HIIT = High Intensity Interval Training. The short version is mixing in fast running with periods of rest vrs setting a consistent pace.
I get some really wierd looks in the gym when I crank up the treadmill up to 9 or 10, then have to back it down to 5 or 6. I get the feeling people think I am trying to show off and then gassing myself, but I don't really care.

I think the wheelbarrow event was much more entertaining than carying a sandbag, plus I took it down a very busy street and went by a few hundred cars.
I think if you are running, people understand the what of it, just not necessarily the why. They know thay should be doing it, and wish that they had the motivation to do it. They look to see what it is that sets a didicated, fit person appart from them. Even if they don't even know it, they are looking with admiration.

jruck- Thanks for the tip on the bannanas. Saw that in another thread as well so I might give that a try. Years ago when I was going to the gym (very frequently, as in small gain, followed by overtraining, followed by frustration of lack of gain, followed by train harder cause I don't know better, followed by completely stopping going to the gym because my tendonitis was so bad I couldn't hold a pencil) I used to eat an apple on the ride over. Probably the only good thing I did do going to the gym at the time.
BamaDave- Where in my post do you see me running fast? Not only do I look like a fool sprinting, I look even worse when I am getting passed by waddling porcupines!
Buk- Really appreciate those words of inspiration. I know that when I see someone hauling a$$ down the side of the road, or even those (like me sometimes) not moving quite so fast, I am thinking that at least they are out there working on improving themselves which is better thatn the majority.

so your arms flail sideways? do they "flap?"
love this tip: try running with yardsticks. that keeps your arms moving correctly--if they cross you'll see it. Or you'll get stabbed.

That tip may work with some but if I tried it my fitness level would surely end somewhere around the 3rd sprint. I would deffinately end up hurting myself, but only if the locals don't shoot me first and just put me out of my misery!LOL
Where in Ma are you from? I grew up in Concord but lived in western Ma and finally Lowell before moving north.

I'm not a runner but very interested in training for endurance. once a week I do interval training at the gym on the eliptical machine.. (Precor 546) It has a setting for 2 min intervals.. you set in the first two (low and high intensity) settings while doing them.. and the machine repeats them as long as you programmed it to.. (20 mins for me)
and as for looks.. I have an anecdote of the first time my boyfriend saw me doing HIITs at the gym. He was on the eliptical beside me and when I was going all out in my second interval near the end of the two minutes.. he said "be carefull, don't do too much" I gave him such a dirty look he didn't say anything for the rest of the time. after I said to him very seriously.. "when I am doing my max in intervals, there are two things you can do.. either 1) encourage me.. or
2)

. (he thought I would say "shut up"

. but I said
