Question

1) I am curious about that hamstring idea...anyone know about that? Is running strength more hamstring related?

2) Running on the ball/front of the foot: any comments about that? I tried it out last night and ran much faster (and "lighter"!!!) than I have all summer. Of course, it was dark and cool out as well...

Any feedback?

Running form can have a dramatic impact on your capabilities. It is definitely something to work on and try to improve. Over-striding is a very common problem. Where your striking foot hits the ground out in front of your body rather than underneith it. Over-striding forces excesive heel striking, acts as a constant brake, and puts more force on the hips and knees. Excessive toe striking for long distances might be too much for your calves to handle. Imagine that your foot is pawing at the ground and pulling you forward. Make sure that you always have a slight forward lean, and that your shoulders are relaxed.

How far was your run last night, how did your time compare to other runs?

Try going out to a field and running barefoot. If your foot strike is painful without shoes, it is most likely not very efficient. Without the cussion of shoes, you can actually fell how you are running, and it should not hurt. But be concious of your style. Take the shoes off of an excessive heel striker and the will change ther form, but not necessarialy notice it, or realize that they run differently with shoes.

toe strikers tend to be faster than heal strikers, and also more prone to injury.

building on what Buk said: I used to be a forefoot stiker almost exclusivly and it works fine for short distances but when you try to really stretch it out the strain on your calves is almost unbearible. Once my calves fried I'd run flat footed and end up pounding the crap out of my knees.

This is a cool topic. I have never thought about my form before. Any more info out there similar to this? I know I land on my heel and roll onto the toes similar to a walk. Is this wrong?
Thanks

This is so interesting.I have heard so much conflicting information regarding the toe vs. heel role debate. I am guessing that there is no one right answer, but I definitely know that what I was doing, the flat foot land, was slowing me down. Way down. I ran with the Nike frees tonight and liked how that felt---supposedly mimics barefoot running...but I think I am still going to try barefoot running as well, to gaige where I am at. Can you tell me a little more about the posture? I thought upright was preferred...
