I want to start running more frequently, and I currently run (treadmill) or hike 3 times a week. Do you supplement your running with some basic lifting, core work? I'm thinking of trying to become a everyday runner, but I feel like I should still do some other exercises with it.

not that you said this, but keep in mind that their isn't a substitution for running (if you want to run anyway), but suplimenting...lunges, squats, deadlifts, step ups, glute hame raise, hypers\reverse hypers.

the list goes on.

Ab work and other core work is important for most any sport and overall health.

I think most runners underestimate the value of a strong upper body and the ability to transfer that strength through their core to improve running efficency. Improving general strength will make all types of activities better.

I apologize, I did not phrase this question very well at all. I want to start focusing my exercise time on running. If I do this there will be limited time for other exercises. However, with the little bit of extra time I have I feel I should do some upper body work and maybe core work, and stretching. I was curious what others do that might be in the same situation.

I have always thought keeping up lower body weight training is good for runners as well to ensure that you are really hitting all of your leg muscles -- running doesn't necessarily do this. With limited time for weight training, I would focus on the main compound movements: squats, deadlifts, rows, pullups, bench press, shoulder presses plus some abdominal work.

For someone truly interested in getting bang for the buck I'd look into olympic style lifts.
