So, I'll be running in my first ever "race" this coming Thanksgiving day and was wondering what to take on the run. It's only 10k, but I expect it to take me at least 75 minutes to run and was wondering if I should have water and/or a snack of some sort for the half-way point? Will this help me, or should I just go it alone?

Thanks,

harpstein

Usually races of that distance will have water/feed stations. sometimes with Gatorade or bananas. Check with the race organizers to se what you can expect. I personally would at least consumer some water. I don't 'bonk' with 75 minutes of continuous aerobic activity, so I wouldn't need carbs, but that is a personal matter for you and your training should let you know what you should do.

Best of luck!

Don't do anything in the race that you haven't done in training. Race day is not the time to try something new. Warm up with a couple of miles and some strides and enjoy the atmosphere. Remember to pace yourself-the temptation is to go out too fast-refuse the temptation. In fact, line up farther in the back than you think you're supposed to. Otherwise, use what you would on a normal training run, relax, and have fun.

it's a little over 6 miles.

I wouldn't overly worry about food or drink during the race. Hydrate really well beforehand (as in all day the day before and up to about an hour or so before the run..then stop). Have a good small meal that morning (or whenever the run is) and you'll be fine.

We have a lot of time between now and Thanksgiving(are ya one of us cool people or do you salute the stars n stripes? )

Either way, lets make it our goal to have you doing it in under an hour! Can you run 10k non stop right now? Whats your current training? And background? How much spare time? Are you scared of pain?

And most important - enjoy the race, the beauty of endurance racing is that its an accomplishment to finish, placing and time means little to 50% of the people running!

Anybody notice that the race harpstein was preparing for was in 2003? I wonder how it turned out?
