I have a feeling we're going to have someone chime in here with the magic answer, and I bet they have less than 10 posts. Call it a hunch.

The best treadmill takes up the least room and looks like the best coat rack and/or clothes line

Cooperone,

I have this one and love it. It's about three years old now, used by me and my wife at least 4 times per week and runs like a champ. Since I'm 200lbs plus and according to my wife run like a brick I think this is a solid performer. With that said, it's all relative to the user. I have a friend who runs 1/2 marathons and hates it, he tells me it's to cushioned for his taste.

OMNI Fitness Equipment - East Coast's Largest Retailer of Quality Home Fitness Equipment - Exclusive Dealer of Life Fitness : Treadmills: Standard - PaceMaster Bronze Basic Treadmill

Hope this helps.

Yeah, those are nice Fish, but then you have stuff like this:

While it's a beautiful view, it's not the most fun to run on.

I have a Pro Form Interactive Trainer, and I love it! I bought it about 3 years ago and its still going strong. It absorbs shock really well, and it also folds up if you need to conserve space. It even has a CD player and fan built right into the panel, but I never use them. If you can get the store to sell you the display model, you can get an incredible deal. When I bought mine, it just so happened that the only one left was the display model. Anyway, hope that helps.

treadmills, as one may gather from the previous posts, are not quite useless but pretty close to it. You have been well advised. So here is the reason I am looking for one. Don't laugh too hard. Walking slow brings down my blood sugars, I rediscover this everytime I go on vacation. But I hate to walk slow, just to walk slow. And all of the DVDs trainers on this site have recommended that we avoid sitting and spending a lot of time with our computers. Which I like to do. So I am buying a treadmill, and will attach my laptop to it, and in the morning walk for an hour or two. I will hate the walking, but like the blood glucose readings I will get. I am buying a cheapo model, cause I will not be going very fast, and I hope it will last. Upshop of all of this: unless you have an equally crazy but valid reason to get a treadmill, DON'T. When I want to run, which I do frequently, I use the indoor track at my gym. Ignore this adviced if you wish. It is admittedly quirky.

Thanks everyone for their input. I know nothing can match a great outdoor run but outdoors that beautiful are rare, especially in a big city. The parks are usually too crowded for a good run and roads are not a safe option. So you have little choices. Treadmill is a decent option. I opted for a Sole F80 treadmill and it works fine for me.
