Default running goals for 2008?

Run fast.

Seriously, I'm going to try to break 1:30 in a half marathon, however that's a pretty huge goal for me. I'd love to have a sub-20 minute 5K in my Sprint Triathlon in June, and I think that is probably far more attainable. Other than than, I want to run fast and far.

Hey Dana, welcome back.

I haven't set any goals for 2008. I'd like to have a better year than 2007, which generally was not a good one for me running-wise. My first priority is to cut my weight back to the 175-180# range, since that is what I weighed when I set most of my PR's in 2005.

I'm expecting this year to be stressful and demanding as I continue to adjust to my new job, so I am reluctant to plan much in the way of racing until I know how much time I'll be able to spend on training.

I still have some unfinished business with that goal of running a sub-3:00 marathon!

Good question... I'd really like to break 20 minutes in a 5k but I'd also like to tackle some trail running/races. I'd also like to train for something longer, maybe a half-marathon or a fall full marathon (a small one). So many things, so little time.

How about you Dana? You asked the question, but didn't give an answer.

I'd just like to get through this year without a major injury Most of my running will be short and intense (sprints, hills, etc), maybe a few 5Ks, maybe a 10K, and that's about it. I'm foregoing pure endurance for speed/strength development.

I already registered for the 2008 Des Moines Marathon in October. Now that I understand my need for orthotics, I think my training will go better. My wife bought me my first subscription to Running World so I'm learning a lot to put to use later. My only goal is to do better in the second marathon than in the first.

Get back to sub-1:30 half marathon (ideally sub-1:25), back to sub-18:30 5k. Do more trail races.

A 1:25? You could do that any day of the week. You've probably blown that out of the water on some of your training runs. You're sub-1:20 material - easy.

This will be my first year running post-bunion surgery. Prior to my surgery, I had to do a walk/run program because my feet hurt all the time. I actually gave up running all together for about 2 years. This year, I want to run a 5k without walking at all.

I'm also doing a few sprint tri's and a 1/2 mary, but I fully expect I will be running/walking. And that's OK.

There's nothing wrong at all with run/walking. I had to do it in my HIM 2 summers ago. If you keep at it, it'll get easier and easier.

I totally agree with emartin10 if you keep at it it will become easier. I have been running since my junior summer of high school to get ready for soccer. I have been running ever since, and now I am a junior in college. Just stick with it. Good luck with the 5k swimbikerun.

My goals are a little less aggressive than all of yours, but my goal is to run 3 ten minute miles with ease. I want to build up to a routine where I jog 3 miles everyday. I also want to continue with strength training on a daily basis, so I don't want the jogging to completely exhaust me, so that's why I threw the at ease part in there. I love this forum! This is exactly what I need to stay motivated. Thanks!

I have similar goals to you Karen. That elusive 30 minute 5K. I know that is jogging for the real runners around here but for a nonrunning lifter it seems more like a 30 minute sprint.

Glad to see I'm not alone here. I've been working at it but it still feels like sprinting to me. It is getting easier though. Good luck to you.
