And it's only a few miles from my current "home"! Nothing like semi-rugged trail running inside a major city... although the rattlesnake warning signs were a little unsettling. I was shirtless and sweating today, it was 60 and sunny when I ran.

I just read an article about how rattlesnakes can be a good training tool. Get the thing all kinds of mad, and then see if you can out run it - instant speed session. You just have to hope you are fast!
Just kidding, looks like a fantastic spot for a trail run!

Yeah, there were signs for that too. Now I know not to try to outrun them... I only read that after the run, though.
I ran a different route yesterday and came across a great single-track trail, as well as a creek and gorge. I also went to the ocean on Saturday and it took like 15 minutes. Bad. Ass.

I always ran on the beach when I was in San Diego on business. There was one state park on the ocean that had a lot of trails through some of the scrub immediately inland from the beach, and then I was able to run down on the compacted sand of the beach as well. Very nice! And of course the weather is almost always perfect for running there.
Went there this morning. Wish I could've stayed longer, but I was on a time crunch. Did the trails and ran on the beach (accidentally soaked my shoes too). I hope they have an annual pass or something, though - it was $8 to drive in!

was it Torre Pines State Reserve? There is an annual pass available.
.Fees
There is a parking fee for any car entering Torrey Pines State Reserve.
General: $8 (everyday)
Senior: $7 (everyday) (62+)
Disabled:$4 (with qualified Dept Parks Recreation pass)
Bus with 10-24 people: $50 all days
Bus with 25+ people: $100 all days
Annual pass: $125
Yep, it was Torrey Pines. $125 isn't too bad, after 16 times there I've made up the fees. Although I preferred the $20 annual pass for the national forest near where I used to live in Virgnia. Now that was a freakin' steal.

Did a 6-mile barefoot beach run at Torrey Pines today. 60 degrees out. My feet hurt more than I expected - I stayed mostly on the compacted sand on the way out, and on the way back I tried to stay in ankle-deep or deeper water the whole way. Then when I was done I took a short dip in the ocean. Colder than it looked.

Yeah, I did that at the Gulf Coast this past Summer, and the bottoms of my feet took something of a beating. Being able to cool off in the water was great, though! I imagine the Pacific is COLD this time of the year - isn't the water pretty cold there even during the Summer (hence the mild Summer climate)?
The water's always cold out here. Barefoot sand running kills my toes. Of course I never keep it up long enough to get used to it. I'm sure it would get better.
About a year and a half ago I did a trail run barefoot and hurt my feet pretty bad. I think that with more and more barefoot running, though, it'll toughen up my feet.
