Default Sore knees?

I've just started running again after some time off. I only run a couple of miles because I think it's almost as boring as watching golf on TV. Attitude aside this week I started to feel a dull pain in my knees. I quit running but still walk. It hurts a bit in the am but in the evening, around dinner it really starts to bother me.

How do you deal with this? I read that cycling might help. I've been taking some advil and gelatin (which I've taken for a while).

First, I'd take some advil (for the anti-inflammatory effects), and ice the bejeezus out of them, like 20 minutes each knee per night as long as they hurt.

B, I'd make sure you are stretching all of the major muscles that you use during your run (quads, hammies, calves, HIPS!!!) both before and after each run. I have AWFUL knees, and at the risk of having to revoke my man card, have started taking yoga 2-3 times a week, and not only have my knees not hurt, I feel more 'in line' running as my hips and hammies are opening up and my lower back is feeling amazing as well.

So ice and stretching, and see how that works for you. Waddle on friend.

I was thinking of doing yoga, I just need to accept that it's ok. The Y has classes that are free. Used to do pilates, that helped my aching bones a bunch. Instructor went to female only classes so that's out of the question.

Waddle on it is. I'm not walking funny (yet). This am I walked at 4.5mph for 30 minutes, no pain. I might just walk until the pain is gone. Sure does suck to be running around outside with the kid then have your knees feel like they're going to explode.

i would for sure get fitted for running shoes if you haven't already. Start back slow. Maybe a 1/2 mile run, walk a 1/2 etc until you finish the workout. Then keep adding 1/2 mile runs. Don't add to much mileage a week, just slow increases.

good luck and welcome back to running.

Why are you running?

As for the knees I'll second (third) the advice you've been given
- Get a great pair of shoes
- Stretch, both actively and passively, to make sure you achieve an optimal ROM.

I'll also add that you should keep your running volume low and build it up slowly. Too much, too soon is a classic combination that ends in injury. You need to allow for you joints and muscles to adapt to the pounding.

Proper stretching is a must, a lot of water might help hydrate joints, other than that its already been said here.

It also depends on the kind of surface you are running on.
If running is what you like you can use a treadmill with good cushion support which reduces the impact on the joints.

I HATE treadmills. They are my enemy. I would rather, and do, go run in negative temps than run on a treadmill. Grrrr.....

Possibly fixable with something as simple as a technique change...

It's been a while since I posted that but I have an update.

No more knee pain. Sometimes they feel fatigued but the rest of me does also. I've started stretching more and changed my stride a bit. The way I run has also changed - I'll walk for 5 min at various speeds before picking up the pace. Water? Lots, maybe not enough though. Started on gelatin, which seems to have eased up on my creeky joints.

For the past 2 weeks I've been running/walking 5 days/wk for 30 minutes. On some days I'll warm up for 5 minutes, run for 20, then walk for 5. Today I did 10 walk/15 run/5 walk.

Yes, it's on a treadmill. I'm living in a different place now that's at 4100'....the road I live on is flat and exposed for around 1/4 mile, the rest is a windy mountain road. No lights at all. After almost getting creamed one morning and having something stalk me another I've decided that the treadmill is ok. I could run later during the day but I wake up at 4:45 and am used to being at the gym by 5:30, home by 6:45 to cook my honey some breakfast.

Getting new shoes next wk, another pair of NB.

The best thing? On 12/10 I was 210#. This morning I was 197.

Great going! Thats another positive for a treadmill. Well sometime it can not beat a nice weather or the beautiful outdoors but for a regular workout it does fine.

I also used to have a lot of problems with my knees when I ran. The tops of them would get so tight and I would feel like my knee cap was going to pop out of place. Getting a new pair of shoes really helped, but the best thing for me was just slowly building up the strength without straining anything. It's frustrating when you feel like you can keep going, but I guess it takes your knees a little longer to catch up with the rest of your muscles. After a couple of weeks, the pain had stopped. I have to ease into it again every time I stop for an extended period of time. Just thought I share a little about my personal experience. Hope it helps.

I know what you mean on that one. It is a lot harder to run on the treadmill. I think it is just because you are doing nothing but focusing on what you're doing. And let's face it, running does not feel that great in the moment. I do run on the treadmill though. I have mine in front of a window, so I can watch what's going outside. I also have to listen to my ipod or I absolutely can't make myself run more than 2 minutes. Those 2 things help a lot. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know I also HATE the treadmill. Probably not quite as much as you though. Take care!
