Default training for my first marathon (walk/jog)

As novice runner, posting here is a little intimidating. I entered the Des Moines Marathon ( October) as a walker but plan to jog and walk. This is my first marathon. The goal is to finish, not get a particular time. I skimmed the Galloway book, Marathon, and I've gotten tips from others. I went 14 miles this morning. My hips hurt at the end. Any advice for beginners would be welcome.

Ice bathes are your friend after about 12+ miles. Get a cup of hot tea, and watch your boys vanish in an instant. Massage helps too.

I'm running my first marathon on October 7. I have found that the Nike+ training system has worked well for me. I have a chip in my shoe and the iPod records all of my runs (pace, distance, time) and uploads them to Nike+'s website. I downloaded a pretty basic marathon training plan there that I have adapted to fit my triathlon habit as well. If you are just focused on finishing, take it easy getting in to your training, because if you don't build a good base, you are going to hurt yourself.

Figure out what nutrition works best for you. Join the July Running Challenge with a realistic goal. Go out and have fun with it, and make sure you post any questions here!

Good luck!

Foam rolling and lots of stretching!

No need to be intimidated here. We are always happy to have more JPF'ers posting here!

My words of advice are to stay hydrated with the Summer running. And if you are already doing 14 mile workouts, you are well ahead of the game with plenty of time to build gradually.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the encouragement. I talked to one of the ladies in physical therapy about doing better with the hip stretching and I hope it will help.

Thanks to you guys for your advice and encouragement.
Yesterday was the Des Moines Marathon and I did it! (my first)
I did a combination of running and walking and finished in about 5 hours.
I'd like to do it again next year and push myself harder now that I know that I've got it in me. My legs are a bit tired today, but I feel remarkably good otherwise. It was educational in many ways (learning about the world of running, nutrition, and dealing with my foot and ankle problems).

Now that your marathon cherry is popped, you can only get better with practice.

Congrats!

Thanks again.
Don't know if this is legal (and I'm not thrilled with associating my name with my picture on the internet) but I'm so proud of my little old legs that if you're motivated you can see my pictures. marathonfoto.com

Better late than never, but great job finishing. It´s a great feeling, and you´ll only get better. Just think about how great it´ll feel to PR in your next marathon. Great job!
